📖🧵 What’s in your wardrobe? Exploring the power of stories and connections In a world of fast fashion and fleeting trends, what if we could see clothing as more than just fabric? A recent Methods@Manchester event explored personal clothing stories, showcasing how garments hold memories and foster connections, led by researchers Sophie Woodward (from The University of Manchester’s Morgan Centre for Research into Everyday Lives, Dr Benjamin Wild, and community leader Jolene Sheehan. From a prayer dress symbolising resilience during conflict to a first date dress that has witnessed four decades of love, the event demonstrated how the items we wear carry stories far deeper than their material substance. Agency is your power to shape your life. It’s the ability to make decisions, act with purpose, and stand firm in your identity. Whether in psychology, sociology, or diversity, agency is the foundation of empowerment. In psychology, it’s about taking control of your actions and believing in your capacity to overcome challenges. In sociology, it’s breaking free from societal norms to create your own path. In diversity and inclusion, it’s having the voice and confidence to advocate for yourself and others. Agency is the key to growth, resilience, and transformation. How are you using your agency today? Let’s talk about it. #Agency #Empowerment #TakeControl #PersonalGrowth #The2AMCode #InclusionMatters

Weekly after Class Reflection - Principles of Sociology - SOCI-1000-0LC The Sociological Imagination by C. Wright Mills emphasizes the concept of taking personal troubles and connecting them to broader public issues. It's common for individuals to blame themselves for challenges like purchasing a home, finding a job, or commuting difficulties. Instead of internalizing blame, let's shift the narrative to understand that external factors play a significant role. For instance, the soaring prices of housing can lead to self-criticism about financial decisions made in the past. By recognizing the larger economic shifts and disparities in wages, we can re-frame our perspective. Many individuals are facing similar challenges, each navigating their unique circumstances in this evolving economic landscape. It's essential to move away from self-blame and embrace a more holistic view that considers societal forces at play. Let's foster empathy and understanding towards ourselves and others as we navigate these shared experiences. #SociologicalImagination #PerspectiveShift #Empathy #Understanding

Jeremy Reynolds is professor of sociology at Purdue University. He studies how workplaces contribute to inequality. Much of his research focuses on variations in the extent to which workers can accommodate personal and family needs by adjusting when, where, and how much they work. His recent research examines whether gig work lives up to its promise of providing the work schedules people prefer. He is a former winner of the Rosabeth Moss Kanter Award, and he has published in leading journals including American Sociological Review, Social Forces, Work & Occupations, Journal of Marriage and Family, and Industrial & Labor Relations Review. I am looking forward to reading this ... The book combines a focus on #socialjustice, equity, diversity and #coproduction to enhance urban life. Exploring a range of #agefriendly community projects, contributors demonstrate that, despite structural obstacles, meaningful #socialchange is achievable at a local level. #GMCA
NEW BOOK LAUNCHED 🙌 'Reimagining age-friendly communities: Urban ageing and spatial justice' is now out, and available open access. https://lnkd.in/ew3Dww3q First time seeing my name on the cover of a book! Proud to have it alongside words like #communities #ageing #justice and #reimagining. Very excited to have been part of this project with Tine Buffel and Sophie Yarker and our many contributing authors, friends and members of the Manchester Urban Ageing Research Group. And because I spent some time making a beautiful slide for our book launch, here they all are below 😊 Leverhulme Trust The University of Manchester Sociology Department

My best advice for those new to marketing and communications or wanting to improve their comms ⬇ Study the basics of sociology and psychology. Over the last year, I've been working with a couple of recent marketing graduates, helping them with their applications and continued learning. It's been in conversations with them that I've realised quite how useful covering both subjects as part of my uni degree really has been. Why? Where sociology looks at how our behaviour is influenced by groups we're part of, like our age, social class, gender, race, religion, and sexuality, psychology, covers how our behaviour is shaped by our thoughts and feelings. Both important when we're looking to target specific audiences with our messaging. Understanding them means that you can craft messages that resonate with your audience, drive engagement, and create meaningful conversations. #MarketingTips #MarketingStrategy #ProfessionalDevelopment

Read a thought provoking book writing in the 2000s, which was well researched. Reminded me of a scientific journal on sociology and psychology, rather than a novel. Malcolm brought on some fascinating points "The studies show essentially that a child is better off in a good neighborhood in a troubled family than he or she is in a troubled neighborhood in a good family.” "... The problem with such a strategy is that parents don’t wield much influence over their children’s personalities, or the kinds of role models that children respect. In general, scientific studies have called into question whether parents ultimately play much role in shaping their children’s personalities at all. Examining adopted children over time, numerous studies suggest that an adopted child’s personality barely correlates with the personality of the child’s adopted parents." "“What Hartshorne and May concluded, then, is that something like honesty isn’t a fundamental trait, or what they called a “unified” trait. A trait like honesty, they concluded, is considerably influenced by the situation....if i ask you to describe the personality of your best friends, you could do so easily, and you wouldn't say things like 'My friend Howards in incredibly generous, but only when i ask him for things..." Thought provoking. A good read for reflection. Especially parents. #tippingpoint #malcolmgladwell #sociology #psychology
