Urban environments have become synonymous with excessive infrastructure and fragmented natural spaces. Streets, once alive with biodiversity, now reflect the overwhelming presence of concrete, leaving little room for nature to thrive. That’s where the Renaturation Potential Tool comes in. This innovative tool is designed to identify high-potential areas for renaturation by evaluating key factors like green space continuity, pedestrian flow, and infrastructure restrictions. By integrating multiple metrics the tool empowers urban planners to better prioritize and enhance urban greening efforts. As a case study, this project applied the tool to the Montparnasse Station neighborhood in Paris. Known for its complex underground infrastructure, high pedestrian flow, and vast mineral surfaces, this area was an ideal testbed to assess how urban vegetation can be reintroduced in spaces with competing demands. I’m thrilled to be presenting this approach, representing AREP which is actively working on the renaturation of the Montparnasse neighborhood.
