Do you compare *to* or compare *with*? I don’t know if this is a question that anyone else ever asks or is even bothered by. But it’s one I ask on a regular basis! And there are different contexts in which to use the phrases. When you compare *to*, you are *likening* two or more things or situations. I compared my daughter’s school relay win *to* Jessica Ennis’s heptathlon Gold at the 2012 London Olympics because I thought it was equally magnificent. I considered my husband’s sponsored cycle ride comparable *to* Adam Yates’ third place in last year’s Tour de France because both were plucky efforts. I am likening these situations, asserting and identifying the similarities in them. When you compare *with*, you are open to noting not only the similarities but also the differences. For example: The distances my husband is covering on his bike rides are incredible, compared with last year’s amateur efforts.   Or, compared with my family home, Buckingham Palace is enormous. So, when you compare *to* you are likening and seeing similarities; but when you compare *with* you are seeing differences. #ComparedTo #ComparedWith ____________________ 📗📗📗 I’m Isla, a book coach, developmental editor and copy editor.
