When you arrive in Milan there is something that you notice immediately: the style of the people. Everybody cares and you slowly get used to the aesthetics and stop noticing the fact that everyone goes to work as if they were going to a fashion show. But what I still find amazing is the process behind the scenes: getting to know the people that imagine and create clothes; learning about the research, the knowledge, the traditions and the innovation that is both technological and artistic. The result is stunning because the work, the know-how and the passion of the whole supply chain is extraordinary. It deserves to be seen, in collaboration with Sonia Brambilla and Gabriella Contestabile so we designed this journey. It is important to start thinking about the people that make what we wear.
The Milan Fashion Week recently took place, bringing to the city so many people that revolves around this sector, so important and fascinating for both professionals and the public. Behind the most glamorous fashion shows and the incredible collections presented by famous designers and brands, there is a whole world of creativity, of tireless and refined work of the highest craftsmanship, of tailors, of ateliers, where the clothes take shape before ending up on the catwalks. To tell this "behind the scenes" and introduce the most curious travellers, who want to discover this part, this soul of Milan, we have designed the "Fashion is Culture" tour, which is receiving a lot of interest and positive feedback. A distinguishing trait of Armani as a true #innovator can be drawn from the rivalry of two key figures in the Italian #renaissance: Baldassar Castiglione and Nicolò Machiavelli. You might be familiar with Machiavelli, political and strategic thinker, and author of The Prince. If you have not heard of Castiglione, he was a renowned diplomat and the author of the century’s most important manual The courtier (Il cortigiano). In the book, which describes the qualities that are needed to thrive in a court, Castiglione presents #fashion, gestures, and etiquette as non-verbal codes, capable of speaking without words, of revealing without ostentation, of showing sophistication without exaggeration. Now, it is easy to see in Armani’s style Castiglione’s notion of sophisticated effortlessness, or, in his word, “sprezzatura”. It is less immediate to recognize his Machiavellian side, intended here not as a form of cynical thinking, but rather as a form of #business realism. In his entrepreneurial journey, Armani bridged the gap between Castiglione’s sprezzatura and Machiavelli’s strategic mindset, and went beyond the industry model, separating the #designer from the CEO, creation from #management. Valentino makes fashion show deal with crumbling Beaux-Arts A much-needed income, but at what cost? Valentino's recent deal with famous Parisian art school, the Beaux-Arts de Paris, is injecting cash into the school's historic buildings, but the move is not without its drawbacks. 🧑🎨The prestigious Parisian institution is not unaccustomed to attentions from the luxury and fashion world. Indeed, due to the grandeur of the art school's buildings, many a catwalk has taken place within its walls. 💰As Glitz.paris has learned, Valentino—in search of a prime location to present its new collections—has signed an exclusive contract with the fine arts school. Indeed, the deal couldn't come too soon for the Parisian establishment, as it has been increasingly plagued by a significant structural deficit. Nevertheless, the deal hangs in the balance: a recent departure of the brand's creative director could jeopardise the agreement. 🤝As of now, luxury has helped get the institution out of the red and fund much-needed restauration projects, nevertheless, this slow process of privatisation has shifted the balance of power toward those of luxury's interests.
