It's important to understand that not all breathwork techniques are equally effective for every state of anxiety. When your nervous system is in a Sympathetic state (fight or flight), employing breathing methods that slow your heart rate—such as longer exhales—can be beneficial. However, if you're in a Dorsal Vagal state (shutdown), deep breathing might inadvertently deepen that shutdown, making you feel more disconnected and low. We all know that some days can be tough, and these exercises can be very helpful to help you manage stess. The vagus nerve is one of the major nerves in our body. It starts at the base of the brain, travels behind the ears, goes down through the neck, and crosses the chest until it reaches the abdomen. It plays a huge role in regulating the autonomic nervous system, which controls our automatic functions like heart rate and digestion. On top of it, stimulating the vagus nerve can improve the communication between the brain and the gut, which is known as our second brain. And that’s why every time you gently scratch behind the ears, massage the neck, inhale through the nose followed by exhale through the mouth with a sound and shake things off, you’re stimulating the vagus nerve, activating the parasympathetic nervous system and helping yourself to feel more calm and relaxed—especially on days when it feels that nothing is going right.
