When you work in homelessness you have a complex relationship with the weather. When it's getting really cold you start to hope it gets really really cold, as additional support is available once the temperature gets below zero. However, while it is good that we do not let people freeze to death on the streets, the current system does highlight two issues: - if we can house people when it's freezing cold, can we figure out a way to house them the rest of the time? - if there are people who refuses offers of temporary accommodation even when it's freezing, what does that say about the quality of those offers? It may be that people are being asked to move a long way from their support networks, which can be scary, or it may be that the accommodation is poor quality While those thoughts are important, the key issue is getting people indoors now, given that it's going to be very cold toninght.
With temperatures dropping, many councils are providing emergency accommodation for people who are homeless. We’re working with them to make sure everyone can inside. If you're concerned about someone who's homeless, please report them using the StreetLink website: thestreetlink.org.uk/

As much as Christmas is a great time for most people, there are many that are negatively affected. Below is one of the videos I’ve watched over the break to remind myself how lucky we all are… If you have a spare 6 minutes please have a watch as this video speaks about many ways homeless people are affected at this time of year. One section includes how 18 people were evicted by a tenant through no fault of their own as the building had been sold. As of recent we have seen many landlords sell portfolios of properties which have a severe impact on the homeless as many return to rough sleeping. The council mentioned in the video have said they pledge to build 1.5 million new homes, which we are hopeful that the we can secure a lot for Social Housing. However, there will come a time where we can’t keep building and there isn’t new accommodation to be acquired. So what is the long term plan for Temporary Accommodation/Rough Sleeping? #housing #homelessness #roughsleeping #temporaryaccommodation

Let me share why I’m so passionate about Wyre Forest & South Worcestershire Nightstop and Mediation Service For many of us, the magic of Christmas leaves happy memories, but for many young people across the county, it can mean something very different: escaping abusive homes, and finding themselves at best, sofa surfing; or at worst, being out on the streets in this freezing weather. The latter are the hidden homeless and there are a great deal more than you realise – young people with no safety net, no loving family to lean on and no bolt hole to regroup. For them, it’s incredibly hard to even think about taking the next steps toward a positive future, and at a time when those who don’t get the support, may enter a difficult life time, and not able to pull themselves out. At Nightstop, our hosts offer more than just a bed for the night, a hot meal, and a shower. They provide safety, compassion, and a vital pause – a chance for a young person to take stock and think about their next steps. I feel so fortunate to have had what so many of us are lucky to take for granted growing up: a safe and stable home. For the young people we support who haven’t had that, offering some stability is a lifeline. If you, or anyone you know, might be interested in becoming a Nightstop host, please get in touch. #JustForOneNight can truly change a young person’s life. #hiddenhomeless #HomelessnessAwareness #MakeADifference #nightstop #bethechange

New research by the Big Issue shows that over 50% of Brits feel more at risk of homelessness this year. Take a look at their video outlining some of the reasons for homelessness (spoiler alert, drugs and alcohol are very rarely the initial cause): https://lnkd.in/eXCpD3ze Our outreach teams can help rough sleepers if we know where they are - reporting the location of someone that needs our support, or your own location will alert our teams and allow us to reach out: https://lnkd.in/evTVUYBK . . #sleepingrough #homelessness #outreachteams #roughsleepers #housingsservices #homelesssupport #streetlink #alertforhelp #multiservicecharity #outreachteams #sleepingrough #thebigissue #sofasurfing #reasonsforhomelessness

𝐇𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐖𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐬 𝐇𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐇𝐢𝐠𝐡...❌ The number of homeless people in Wales has reached a devastating new milestone, with the use of temporary accommodation such as B&Bs rising by 18%, now totaling 6,447 individuals in 2023-24. This sharp increase highlights the urgent need for effective solutions to tackle homelessness and ensure that those in need have access to safe, stable housing. As we face these difficult statistics, it's crucial that we come together—government bodies, organisations, and communities—to address the root causes of homelessness, from the shortage of affordable housing to the broader social and economic challenges many are facing. We must continue to push for stronger policies, more funding for support services, and an overall shift towards sustainable solutions. Every person deserves a place to call home🏡 If you are looking for any 𝑯𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒔𝒔 𝑶𝒇𝒇𝒊𝒄𝒆𝒓𝒔 𝒐𝒓 𝑯𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝑨𝒅𝒗𝒊𝒔𝒐𝒓'𝒔 to assist you with the extra workload, please get in touch📞📧 https://lnkd.in/eWPR3bKP #Homelessness #Wales #SocialHousing

Homelessness Week: Increased strain on the homeless and our social systems It's peak tourist season here in Cairns. When short-term accommodation options are full or push out crisis occupants, several issues arise: 1. Increased Homelessness: Individuals and families may end up without shelter or in unsuitable conditions. 2. Added Stress: Finding alternative accommodation heightens stress and anxiety. 3. Disruption of Support Services: Interrupted access to essential resources and assistance. 4. Health and Safety Risks: Greater risk of health issues and unsafe conditions. 5. Strain on Emergency Services: Increased demand strains resources and response efforts. Addressing these challenges requires a coordinated response from all sectors to ensure adequate resources and solutions for those in need. Let's work together to make a difference! #HomelessnessWeek #Homesforkids #SupportandSolidarity #EndHomelessness

Our latest #HomeTruths paper explores how approximately half of households in emergency accommodation in the Southwest are long-term homeless, meaning they've been stuck there for six months or more. Waiting for news that they might find somewhere to call home. Two years for Henrik - and counting. I’m two years (in emergency accommodation) and they (say) “wait, wait, wait”. Okay, so what I can do? Not much. I don’t want to do nothing. But after two years, you just like, used to it, you know? So I have to wait. I just waiting. It’s too long.” How long is as emergency? How long do people need to wait? #CorkSimon #HomeTruths #EndHomelessness #PeopleDeserveBetter #Cork

Today on World Homeless Day we are reminded that housing is a basic human right. It is unknown what the full impact recent government policy and work to move people and families living in emergency housing will have on rates of hidden and visible homelessness. CHA supports the Government's move to get people out of emergency housing, but it needs to be into long-term, stable, affordable housing that meets their needs. https://ow.ly/Fwa950TIjyF

🚶♀️🚶♂️ On this Walk to Work Day, let's take a moment to reflect on the journey many face without stable housing and reliable transportation. For individuals experiencing homelessness, every step isn't just a walk; it's a quest for survival, a search for stability, and a path toward hope. As we lace up our shoes and hit the streets, let's remember those who walk miles each day in search of shelter, support, and a brighter tomorrow. Let's raise awareness about the transportation barriers that often exacerbate the challenges faced by the homeless community, from accessing essential services to securing employment opportunities. Today, let's walk not just for ourselves but also for those whose journeys are marked by uncertainty and adversity. Together, let's advocate for inclusive transportation policies, affordable housing solutions, and compassionate support systems that uplift and empower every individual to walk their path with dignity and purpose. #WalktoWorkDay #HomelessnessAwareness #TransportationJustice #BuildingBelonging 🌟👟
