Those who know me well certainly know this and it is not an unusual trait among themed entertainment professionals, many of whom embarked on their careers in the amusement industry inspired by this unique storytelling medium. The International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) hosted a record breaking trade event in Amsterdam this past week, IAAPA Expo Europe, and this included an "EDUsession" titled "Dark Rides: Now, Wow and Awe Experiences" and the attached shares the highlights of this presentation regarding "the importance of empirical research in optimizing dark ride design and experience to realize an attractions goals."

Rethinking family experiences during the holidays 🎄 Today, we visited an outdoor Christmas fair in Madrid—a festive wonderland brimming with lights, music, and activities for kids. The decorations were magical, and the staff’s warmth made it clear they wanted every visitor to leave with a smile. But amidst the excitement, I couldn’t help but notice how overstimulating the experience was. Between the loud music, packed crowds, and long lines—just to take a quick photo on a Christmas vehicle or similar—it was hard to fully enjoy the moment. What could have been a peaceful family outing turned into a reminder of how overwhelming some modern entertainment experiences can be. It got me thinking: as the entertainment industry evolves, there’s a growing demand for something deeper. Families are craving experiences that go beyond the spectacle—spaces that spark joy, awaken creativity, and help us reconnect with our inner child. Funding applications for local business to develop ideas, proof of concepts and prototypes using immersive technologies such as augmented reality, virtual reality, and mixed reality to enhance visitor attractions!   The Augment the City Challenge Competition, led by Belfast City Council’s City Innovation Office and funded by the Belfast Region City Deal is now OPEN for applications.   Local businesses interested in applying for funding can find out more by registering for an online briefing event taking place on 18 April 2024.   The funding competition will be delivered across three phases: ➡️ Phase 1: Up to ten companies will be offered up to £10,000 each to develop their concepts. Smartify, a visitor engagement platform for #attractions, has raised £1.5 million. The investment in the company was led by Metavallan VC with Pembroke VCT also participating. Founded in 2015, Smartify wants to expand its international presence and use its SaaS platform and app to “revolutionize how museums and visitor attractions connect with their audience,” a statement said.
