Accessibility is a huge problem, especially within our statutory services. A basic definition of Accessibility is that is a human right and ethical imperative that ensures equal access to opportunities and resources for all individuals, including those with disabilities.
In practice, especially in statutory services, it is a corporate responsibility which aims to achieve inclusion and equal participation, and a regulatory compliance. Morally speaking, if your service or yourself, as a professional, are not accessible (always talking about stat services) you are ethically questionable and borderline discriminatory and oppressive (to say the least).
For professionals it simply means that the onus is on you to be accessible to the people you work with. Accessible means everything, from the way you speak, to the way you are contactable, available, and even the language you use, and the decisions you make, to name a few.
So next time you feel that you should end a referral because a parent did not show up, or you feel that this parent does not get it, or you repeat the same words very slowly to someone who does not understand english whether you say it slowly or not, try and remind yourself that the onus is on you, as a professional, to make yourself accessible.
Diversity and Equality is not just about race, is about committing to human rights, otherwise you are just a gatekeeper who feels entitled to play god with taxpayer’s money.
