PH21 Gallery presents: 'Silence' – A Curated International Photography Exhibition, January 11 – February 4, 2025 - Silence is always juxtaposed against its opposites: sound, noise, and loudness. It is strongly associated with loneliness, alienation, the unknown and disturbing landscape on the one hand, and known tranquillity and peace on the other. Photographically, the contrast between deep darkness and dazzling light is also crucial. After natural or social catastrophes, everything falls silent: empty cities, villages, abandoned public transport and empty workplaces serve as reminders of the transience and fragility of humankind. Silence is accompanied by quiet activities such as contemplation and meditation, which negate the very nature of action itself. Additionally, silence is often present in still lifes, cityscapes, portraits, and many other photographic genres. PH21 Gallery invites photographers to submit their work for our group exhibition themed Silence. We welcome submissions from all photographers interested in sharing their experiences of silence with a broader international audience through exposure at PH21 Gallery. The theme is broadly construed without any photographic genre restrictions. We are interested in all possible creative photographic interpretations of the theme. Deadline: November 11, 2024. https://lnkd.in/esz24kxp #TheArtList #PH21Gallery #Silence

📢PROPJECTS: Dutch photography exhibition soon to kick off in Shenzhen Next week, featuring the Dutch photography duo SCHELTENS & ABBENES, the exhibition "PROPJECTS" is going to open at the Shenzhen Art Museum. Being their first solo show in China, the exhibition seeks to contemporize classical aesthetics, while exploring and constructing the boundary between virtual imagery and real life within the context of modern visual culture. This exhibition is curated by Marcel Feil and Gang Liu, and supported by the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in China. Comprising photographer Maurice Scheltens and visual artist Lisbeth Abbenes, Scheltens & Abbenes are one of the most pioneering photography duos in the Netherlands today. https://lnkd.in/eKKbZT6W Their work often begins as commissioned projects for museums, magazines, design and fashion brands, with still life as their primary subject. Using their lens to examine everyday objects, they treat these still-life subjects as “modular components for constructing new visual experiences.” Their sharp observational perspective challenges fixed perceptions of objects, aiming to evoke a sense of surprise and unfamiliarity in viewers. Scheltens & Abbenes innovate by altering the distance, perspective, and compositional relationships between the camera and the subject. The still-life objects in their images take center stage, being “dressed,” “manipulated,” and “deconstructed” until they are liberated from familiar contexts, creating a new way of seeing. #DutchCulture #Dutchphotography #DutchArts #Shenzhen

PH21 Gallery presents: 'Upside down ' – A Curated International Photography Exhibition, February 8 – March 4, 2025. While photographs are valued for their depictive potential and representative content, the non-depictive, non-representational aspects of photographic works are also strongly related to their aesthetic significance. In this spirit, art photography has always aimed for the unity of form and content. Abstract photography has gone even further, celebrating abstract compositions for their own sake, without the need for appreciating or even recognising depictive content in the images. Turning a photograph upside down tends to strip it of its representative function because the depicted scene and objects are difficult, if not impossible, to recognise when the image is turned on its side or upside down. However, the formal, compositional aspects of photographs become more pronounced in this manner, as our attention is directed away from scene and object recognition. In our Upside down exhibition, we aim to showcase photographs that are indeed turned upside down. Any photograph is eligible if the artist is willing to present it in this unconventional way. Abstract photographs might be considered the most suitable candidates for this experimental exhibiting method, but there are many depictive works as well whose compositional qualities might also be appreciated in novel ways when turned upside down. This allows us to liberate ourselves from scrutinizing and concentrating solely on their representational content. Deadline: December 09, 2024. https://lnkd.in/ePjrzTJQ #TheArtList #PH21Gallery #UpsideDown

PH21 Gallery presents: 'Dis/harmony' – A Curated International Photography Exhibition - Harmony is an elusive, perhaps even ineffable aspect of photographic images. The same can be said for disharmony, its potentially disturbing, but often stimulating opposite. While many photographers share the view that the communicative impact of images is enhanced by harmony, there are countless individual artistic interpretations of what makes an image harmonious or disharmonious. Some view harmony primarily as a visual compositional feature, accepting the unusual, the unexpected, or even the disturbing within the realm of compositional harmony or disharmony. For others, harmony is also a thematic concept, and they find harmonious elements in the communicative content of the image, arising from the various interactions depicted. The intentional lack of harmony can also lead to some of the most creative photographic compositions. All photographic genres utilise compositional elements to create the sense of harmony or its opposite. PH21 Gallery invites photographers to submit their work for its group exhibition themed Dis/harmony. We are seeking submissions from all photographers who consider harmony or disharmony to be a constitutive element in their work and who wish to share their art with a wider international audience through PH21 Gallery. The theme is broadly construed; harmony or disharmony may be present as a formal aesthetic feature and can be expressed visually on personal or social levels, whether literally or in abstract, symbolic ways. Deadline: October 14, 2024. https://lnkd.in/eaY6e2jj #TheArtList #PH21Gallery #Dis/harmony

In my photographic work for construction and industrial sites, I find inspiration in the unique textures and forms of concrete and structures. Through an artistic reinterpretation process, I transform these industrial surfaces into ethereal clouds, abstract strokes, and dreamlike landscapes.I complement these compositions with characters and elements also derived from the same industrial environments, giving them new life as fantastical beings inhabiting imaginary realms. Each piece is a manifesto of art's ability to transcend the ordinary and elevate the everyday into realms of beauty and fantasy. I invite the viewer to immerse themselves in these creations where the industrial transforms into the ethereal.Through my work, I celebrate how the artist can reinvent their environment, find magic in unexpected places, and create new worlds from humble elements. My works remind us that creativity knows no bounds, and beauty can emerge from the most unsuspecting corners. #saachyart #collage #digital #photography

PH21 Gallery presents: 'Portraits Beyond Faces' – A Curated International Photography Exhibition - Portraiture emerged as one of the most prominent genres of depictive media early in the history of the visual arts; tacit or explicit rules, conventions and cultural expectations have always influenced the ways in which artists approached the genre. Photography is no exception. Numerous different and characteristic styles of portraiture emerged throughout the history of the medium. We usually assume that faces are necessary components of portraiture; we may, however, learn just as much about the character, the personality of a person by looking at images that depict other parts of their bodies, show us the objects or places associated with them. Not focusing on the face may open up a new dimension of interpretation. Our Portraits Beyond Faces exhibition is dedicated to this challenging divergence from the more conventional approaches to the genre. PH21 Gallery invites photographers to submit their work for our group exhibition themed Portraits Beyond Faces. We welcome submissions from all photographers interested in this theme, providing them with an opportunity to share their work with a broader international audience through the exposure offered by PH21 Gallery. The theme is broadly defined, and we are interested in all kinds of portraits that characterise persons without focusing on the depiction of their faces. DEADLINE: July 22, 2024. https://lnkd.in/eGwWbAF7 #TheArtList #PH21Gallery #PortraitsBeyondFaces
