I was a little nervous to post this, but think it is important. For a few years now on #bellletstalk day I have shared that later in life I went to get help for what I thought was #OCD. For the last year in finding supports for my son who has special needs, I went through extensive testing and history deconstruction to understand the similarities and genetics. I was shocked and astonished to find I actually am #autistic which would previously be called high functioning Aspergers. My stigma like many was from a place of non understanding and fear. While there may be a label, it provides a lot of clarity to a lot of struggles I have had but were unexplained since being a child. I didn’t easily fit in, I was bullied (both in school and different workplaces), I’ve lost friends, and even some family members avoid or not want to acknowledge this difference. While I was nervous to share this for fear of criticism, or doubt on ability, intelligence, or social acceptance, I share it today humbly and openly to hopefully inspire others to not be afraid if you or someone you love is “different”. There is no such thing as disability but rather a different set of ability. Each and every one of us bring different things to the world and our gifts are unique. I share it as acceptance starts with an understanding that everyone’s unique experiences are valid and today on #AutismAcceptanceDay we create a space for the Autism community, to speak openly and without judgment. On today and every day, we recognize and appreciate the differences in all of us. #progressoverperfection #TheConnectionIsYou
