If you found yourself alone or in need, do you know who you would turn to? It’s a tough question, and one that doesn’t necessarily have a straightforward answer. You might pick different people for different moments. At Family Rights Group we support young people by working with children’s services and local authorities help them create Lifelong Links with people in their lives who they trust and want to stay in contact with. This comprehensive Lifelong Links explainer guide from Hertfordshire County Council sets out the steps that are followed to establish Lifelong Links, including how to self-refer, how goals are set and what our coordinators do to make everything run as smoothly as possible.

Support them to make friends, not be the friend and leave— Many of us have encountered situations in our organizations or circles where support workers become friends with people with disabilities. At first, this might seem beneficial—there are fewer challenges, fewer behaviors, and less "work" to do because of the shared bond. It can also reduce the need to support them in building social skills. However, after a year or so, the support worker may take another job and leave, creating a void in the person's life. This can cause immense difficulty as they process the loss of a friend and try to accept a new support worker, who may become another friend only to leave again, continuing the cycle. This cycle does not help the person with a disability develop the social skills needed to make friends in their community or build relationships outside their bubble. We must support them in making friends, not become their friends and limit their capacity to form connections. A wonderful video in the link by Dave Hingsburger: https://lnkd.in/gcJPDf9q
