Home: More Than a Place Home is more than walls and a roof—it's a feeling. It’s where we find comfort, create memories, and truly belong. Whether it’s the laughter of loved ones, the warmth of familiar spaces, or the quiet moments of peace, home is our sanctuary in a busy world. As our lives evolve, so does our idea of home. It’s not just where we live—it’s where we thrive. #snsinstitutions #snsdesignthinkers #designthinking

False Choices - Part I It hit me while walking through the International Builders’ Show. Before I share that thought, you might ask “Why was a military IT leader” at a trade show for the home construction industry. The answer is that I am restoring a mountain cabin and wanted to know what I didn’t know (i.e., Rumsfeld’s “unknown unknowns.”) Before attending, I thought I had a lot of options for flooring, siding, and lighting. I had been to Home Depot, Lowes, and my local kitchen & bath store. But one step into the massive Vegas convention center told me that there was an entire universe of products and ideas that I had never seen in my local market. Every day of our lives, we are presented with choices and have been inculcated to believe that we have the freedom of choice. Fast food options are abundant, but suffer from the “Taco Bell Syndrome*.” The same is true with retail stores. It is not until you observe from a different perspective that you realize that you are a victim of False Choices. You are free to choose from a set of choices that have been curated for you by someone else. We follow this paradigm in the military when presenting leaders with “Courses of Action” or COAs. An action officer always presents three options: one that is impractical, one that fails to met the objective, and one that is the recommended option. Only one option was viable. A false choice. We see this methodology everywhere. At fast food restaurants, you are presented with small, regular, and large options. Groceries present a store brand, a name brand, and a premium brand of products. When it comes to home improvement, stores like Home Depot and Lowes decide the quality and breadth of options to present to you. We also see False Choices in politics. Years ago, my community was unincorporated county. We were presented with a ballot that asked us to choose between being incorporated as City A or City B. There was no option to remain unincorporated even though it was an option. In the upcoming presidential election, we are being asked to select from a pre-selected list of candidates even if we dislike all of the options. We have to ask, with 342 million people in the United States, why is our choice so limited? But visiting the Builders’ Show makes you realize that there are many more options in this world. Not just the options that have been curated for you. The value of visiting the Builders’ Show, figuratively, is that it gives you a different perspective from which to view the world. This is true of any industry or profession. If you spend your career in a single industry surrounded by people who think alike and choose alike, you are likely to miss the bigger picture. To remain effective and relevant, you must constantly look at your business challenges from different perspectives. Otherwise, you risk being a victim of False Choices. *I will delve into the “Taco Bell Syndrome” in my next post.

"Remember to hold the door with the toothbrush before you flush the toilet." (or why you shouldn't DIY your brand) When I go to an Airbnb, my first question is, "where are the hacks?" A house without a hack is like a garden without flowers. I don't trust a house that is fully finished. Never seen one. No matter how spectacular the house is, there's always: - Something fixed with wire or tape. - An unopened box from the moving. - A hanging lightbulb waiting for the perfect lamp. All of them are temporary solutions that last a lifetime. Those things are cute and make you feel at home instantly, but I wouldn't accept them in a 5* hotel. They sell comfort, relax and luxury after all. We can tell when you DIY your brand without a professional. Some fixes are more decent than others, but the general impression is the same: This is not a serious business. I'll help you have a professional brand instead of a cute this-will-do solution. How many of those hacks do you have at home? I'll share mine on the comments 😁 PS. Picture of me in my last Airbnb admiring the gas heater.
