The inaugural event, however, was interrupted by the #outbreak of World War II and didn't fully launch until 1946. 👉The Palme d'Or Didn't Exist Until 1955: While the Cannes Film Festival is now synonymous with the prestigious Palme d'Or, the award wasn’t introduced until 1955. Before that, films were awarded the “Grand Prix du Festival International du Film.” The design of the Palme d’Or, a golden palm leaf, was #inspired by the coat of arms of the city of Cannes. 👉Scandals Have Played a Big Role in Its History: Over the years, Cannes has been no stranger to controversy. From protests to film withdrawals, one of the most notable moments was in 1968, when the festival was canceled midway due to widespread protests in #France, including filmmakers such as Jean-Luc Godard and François Truffaut, who disrupted screenings in solidarity with the May '68 movement.

Leverage any way you can.
Last year I was at The Big Apple Film Festival for a documentary I directed and produced. Some of the people I met there I’m still in contact with. If you submit your film to any festival you need to come up with a list of ‘wants.’ What do you want from the festival? It could simply be you want to show your film on a big screen or attend some of their panels or have an excuse for taking a vacation if it’s in a location you want to visit but any festival you get into you want to be able to use it (the laurels) as leverage for your next project. Well how do you do that? First it doesn’t have to be a huge festival like Tribeca or Cannes, as long as it’s got some sort of clout showing a possible investor you make films that festivals want to show is validation you produce work others want to screen. You should also be updating everyone about your screening as a way to stay on their radar so when you do show them your campaign for your next film they remember that you had a festival film screening so you’re not just jumping out from nowhere. This is why I send people updates even though I know they aren’t going to actually go to my screening, I do it to remind them I’m making work that is being accepted. Doesn’t mean every film you make has to be entered into a festival. I just did a short film I don’t want to submit, I’m more interested in growing my YouTube channel and that’s okay too because I can send that link to people and since it’s online they have a better chance of watching it because they watch it anywhere. So my whole point is, is the have a plan but always leverage your films. Let everyone know what’s going on so they see you as active so they too want to be part of your next project.
