📢 Tomorrow, EU Commissioner-Designate Olivér Várhelyi faces a pivotal hearing in the European Parliament—will his title as Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare bring real change for animals or remain just an empty label? Dr. Jo Swabe, senior director of public affairs for Humane Society International/Europe, raises an important question in this Euractiv article: "Will the title of Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare prove to be an empty box?" As of now, the European Commission has fallen short on its commitments to fully revise EU animal welfare legislation, leaving critical issues unaddressed. For example, the promise to end caged confinement for farmed animals by the end of 2023 has yet to materialize, disappointing the 1.4 million citizens who signed the European Citizens' Initiative to #EndTheCageAge. We need real action, not just words, to support farmers in transitioning to more humane systems and to enforce consistent welfare standards for animals across all #EU member states. The Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare must be clear-eyed, decisive, and ready to implement effective solutions for the welfare of millions of animals. It’s time for the EU to make good on its promises. 🇪🇺 #HSIEurope #AnimalWelfare #EUFarmToFork #EUAnimalWelfare #FarmAnimals Read the full article 👉 https://lnkd.in/dMuYdZyg European Parliament

It’s a wrap for the hearing of Commissioner-designate for Health and Animal Welfare Oliver Várhelyi. This is how it went 👇 Good news first: He acknowledged that animal welfare is a matter very close to European citizens’ hearts and committed to improving animal welfare standards. “Cages are becoming obsolete,” he said loud and clear – and we couldn’t agree more. Recognising the success of the End the Cage Age ECI signed by 1.4 million EU citizens, he confirmed that the European Commission will respond to citizens’ request and deliver on its promises. While he said he will, from day one, “sit down to see how we can #EndTheCageAge” with various stakeholders, especially farmers, he failed to commit to a clear timeline to present the proposal. All the necessary consultations and impact assessments have already been conducted, and the Strategic Dialogue is the most recent example of that – calling for a ban on cages and a review of the block’s animal welfare legislation by 2026. What's needed now is prompt action. Pressed multiple times about the missing proposals to reform the block’s animal welfare legislation, he confirmed he aims to finalise the transport proposal as soon as possible – affirming that leaving animals stranded at EU borders is simply unacceptable. However, he missed the chance to commit to delivering the pending files on the keeping and slaughter of farmed animals - disregarding the clear consensus found in the Strategic Dialogue report. Instead, he said he will insist on enforcing the current legislation. Regrettably, he also failed to condemn factory farming, claiming it is necessary for food security. In reality, intensive farming is harmful to animals, people and our planet. To make clear that animal welfare is as central to his political priorities as it is to his title, the future Animal Welfare Commissioner as well as the European Commission more broadly need to turn words into action. #DeliverTheProposal #EndTheCageAge #EPHearing #AnimalWelfare

This report highlights how important supermarket action is in improving animal welfare. Well worth the read. Most New Zealanders are aware of the massive power our Supermarket Duopoly has. When people were outraged to learn that hens were trapped in cages to lay eggs, our supermarkets were among the first of the companies to make a commitment to only sell cage-free eggs. Now, the issue of Frankenchickens, (chickens bred for meat who are bred to grow unnaturally fast), is top of mind for many in the animal advocacy movement. It is time we see supermarkets in NZ commit to banning the use of these unhealthy breeds. #FoodBusiness #Supermarket #NewZealand
Supermarket Frankenchickens "biggest animal welfare crisis in the country", claims report.

The Business Benchmark on Farm Animal Welfare (BBFAW), serves as a valuable resource for a coalition of institutional investors holding assets totaling US$2.3 trillion. Whereas 95% of global food companies now recognise ‘farm animal welfare’ as a core business issue, few however are reporting successful implementation of these ambitions - 93% of companies were given a poor ‘E’ or ‘F’ rating for ‘Performance Impact’. The investor coalition is poised to engage with companies in the year ahead to help drive further improvements.
