These are the gladiators of cycling! I loved the practical and educational approach to performance in track cycling in Hamish Ferguson's PhD thesis. I was fortunate enough to get a chat with him where he shares his wisdom from 33 years of coaching track and road cyclists. We also discussed the interesting insight from his PhD on power output in track cyclists. Turns out that sprint cycling is so much more than peak power output. https://lnkd.in/d6XZVr6z

Kaizen: Tiny improvements can lead to aggregate gains! I have always found the example of the British cycling team's marginal gains between 2007 and 2017 to be particularly inspiring. During this period, British cyclists achieved remarkable success, winning 178 world championships, 66 Olympic or Paralympic gold medals, and capturing five Tour de France victories. This success underscores how small, incremental changes can accumulate to create substantial competitive advantages. The British cycling team under Sir Dave Brailsford. By seeking 1% improvements in all areas—from training methods to equipment—they achieved outstanding success, winning numerous world championships and Olympic medals. Just as with Kaizen, this approach highlights how small, incremental improvements can lead to significant advantages.

*** New blog post *** Go Dutch 2024 - Part 4: Intercity In which I report on a cycle between the cities of Breda and Dordrecht and how the cycling and motoring networks differ. If you get the chance, it is well worth cycling between places in the Netherlands as it gives so much insight into how the cycling and motoring networks have been separated out. https://lnkd.in/ebWqteV2

🚴♂️⏱️ **From Triathlon Hero to Tour de France Aspirant: Kristian Blummenfelt's Bold Dream That Almost Was** This summer, the triathlon community was abuzz when the legendary Kristian Blummenfelt announced his daring intent to switch gears from triathlon to professional road cycling, aiming to dominate no less than the Tour de France. A powerhouse in triathlon, his declaration was bold and took everyone by surprise, stirring excitement and debate among fans and athletes alike. Having watched athletes transition between sports, I've seen the thrill and challenge it brings—not just to the athletes but to us, the spectators and supporters. It makes you wonder, what drives a top-tier athlete to consider such a leap? And what does it take to succeed in a completely different sport at the highest level? 🤔 What do you think are the biggest challenges athletes face when switching to a completely different sport? Could this have been a new era for Kristian and cycling? Or is the specialization necessary in sports like cycling too steep a mountain to climb, even for a triathlon legend? Well done NZ - an epic Olympics campaign that has resulted in the most medals at the event. 👏🏽👌🏽🎖🥇 Serendipitious to read this article about marginal gains and how that catapulted British cycling. Key take aways: 1) think small, not big 2) adopt a philosophy of continuous improvement 3) focus on progression and compound the improvements and lastly, identify the critical success factors and ensure they are in place, focus improvements around them. We know the benefit of compound interest - let's apply it to development. #marginalgains #atomichabits #tinyhabits #development
