Starting on September 4, 2024, AWS CodeBuild will upgrade its fleet of build hosts to use Amazon Linux 2023 (AL2023) from Amazon Linux 2 (AL2) [1]. If your builds rely on AL2 as the underlying operating system, you will need to update your buildspec and any custom images to work with the AL2023.

In this tutorial, we will be looking at how to create, launch and access an Amazon Linux 2023 AMI as well as how to access it via Windows CLI and Putty. This is a series of tutorials that will provide step by step-by-step guides on how to launch a web application, create an AMI image, create an application load balance and auto-scale the web application. As extras, I might add how to secure the web application and register a domain. ✍

I'm starting to port bucketAV over to Amazon Linux 2023 from Amazon Linux 2. So far, the main pain point is logs. AL2023 uses journald by default for most of the services. Unfortunately, some still log to files (SSM agent, CloudWatch agent). The official amazon-cloudwatch-agent still does not support shipping journald logs to CloudWatch logs. For now, I started to use Vector from Datadog to bridge the gap, but I wonder what others are using. I hope to see the boot time reduced a fair bit by using the minimal image. Stay tuned for results. Please share your learnings with me :)

CBL-Mariner (now known as Azure Linux), the base OS for Microsoft Azure Linux containers as well as WSL2, running a full graphical interface, in the form of XFCE. Due to its barebones form (the main purpose of this distro being to run containers), a lot of dependencies, including X11 had to be built manually. Probably the closest we have to a full-blown Linux distro from Microsoft😅
