Water storage can contribute to better environmental outcomes. Here they are supplementing baseline water flows. We can’t simply stop our current landuse. We need time to adapt and need investment such as the Waimea. If we want first world standards of living we need water storage. That needs to be balanced against an obligation to make sure we don’t destroy the environment.
Check out this beauty! The Waimea Community Dam is now complete, and pending its official commissioning. We've been through a very dry summer here in Tasman and it had got to the point where we had significant water restrictions in place. Thanks to the Waimea Community Dam, we managed to start releasing water just in time to lift most of those restrictions and prevent any more significant ones.

🌿 🌿 🌿 🌿 As we mark the 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟰 𝗩𝗜𝗡𝗖𝗜 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗗𝗮𝘆𝘀, we have much to celebrate! Amongst our hundreds of initiatives to improve our projects’ environmental performance, two of Spiecapag’s initiatives have been recognised with the runner-up prize at the IPLOCA 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱𝘀 ceremony recently held in Sorrento, Italy. Congrats to our Dunkirk Equipment Depot team in France, who reduced water consumption on site thanks to the installation of a 10,000-litre water tank to collect rainwater, enabling us to clean our fleet of 1,150 machines and prepare them for new challenges around the world, while contributing to reducing our carbon footprint. Special mention to our Western Australian HDD team for receiving the runner-up prize by contributing to significant fresh water and emissions savings via four construction initiatives: ♻️ Drilling fluid ♻️ Seawater replacement ♻️ Topsoil management ♻️ Hydrotest recycling 🔎 Overall, the project team estimated a freshwater saving of 427ML (or 171 Olympic swimming pools 🏊🏊🏊🏊🏊), and a reduction of 1,683 tonnes of emissions from transport and production (equivalent to taking 365 cars off the road for a year 🚗 🚗 🚗 🚗 🚗). These initiatives not only contributed to run the project smoothly with minimal disturbance to a sensitive environment, but also offer 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗶𝗻𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝘂𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗗𝗗 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆. #IPLOCA #environmentawards #HDD Spiecapag Australia HDI - HORIZONTAL DRILLING INTERNATIONAL VINCI Construction VINCI Construction Terrassement Trenchless Australasia The Australian Pipeliner

This is a big deal! “If it works here, it will work anywhere” said the Andrew Parsons; Christopher Hearn continued “We are innovative by nature because we had to be”; "Kraken Robotics mantra is ‘innovate or die’” David Shea concluded. This is what the ocean technology sector is all about in Newfoundland and Labrador. #ocean #oceans #oceantech #oceantechnology #innovation #oceansupercluster #researchanddevelopment #marineindustries #marinetechnology #marineindustry #oceanofopporutnities #oilandgas #offshore #bluetech #blueeconomy #aquaculture #fishery #shipping #defence #shipbuilding #energy #arctic #renewableenergy #cleantech #harshenvironment #RemoteOperations #researchanddevelopment #artificialintelligence #ai #oceansai
Earlier this year I was invited to St. John’s, Newfoundland & Labrador, to discover how the cumulative #maritime, #offshore #energy and #subsea #industries have developed. I have a fairly long, nearly 20-year relationship traveling north of #NewYorkCity, up the Atlantic coast of North America to its easternmost point and finding what is arguably one of the nicest, one of the heartiest and one of the most #innovative populations per capita in the world. It had been many years since I last made the trek to St. John’s – but to be fair the Covid years put a hold on many trips – and what I found exceeded expectation. Companies once small have emerged into world #leaders; led by the #government, there is palpable growth and #investment in the #technology, people and #infrastructure, investment to both help local companies grow and investment to attract international partners and collaborators. “If it works here, it will work anywhere” said the Andrew Parsons; Christopher Hearn continued “We are innovative by nature because we had to be”; "Kraken Robotics mantra is ‘innovate or die’” David Shea concluded. Those are not simply catch phrases. Newfoundland & Labrador holds a unique geographic position jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean, giving it a literal front row seat to a confluence of differing environmental forces; forces which can make life difficult, but can also help to develop a sharp group of innovators that must invent to survive. With that, I welcome you to the special Newfoundland & Labrador supplement to Marine Technology Reporter, Maritime Reporter and Engineering News and Offshore Engineer Magazine. ‘Thanks you’ too, to all friends in the region – old and new – that took their time and effort to help contribute to this publication. What follows is simply a glimpse of the opportunities that await. https://lnkd.in/eZxMF_Vt #shipsandshipping #maritimeindustry #subseatechnology #offshore #offshoreindustry #Canada #NewfoundlandandLabrador Oceans Advance Inc. "The massive arrival of sargassum on the coasts of the Mexican Caribbean has generated an environmental and socioeconomic crisis. The excess of this seaweed has represented a loss of 11.6% of Quintana Roo’s PIB – around 41 billion Mexican pesos (~2 mld Euro). The Kingdom of the Netherlands has a long tradition in coastal management and marine engineering. With countries in the Kingdom that are being affected by sargassum, such as Curaçao and Sint Maarten, we have developed a strong knowledge foundation. This in combination with impressive innovations for collecting plastics in open water, Mexican stakeholders consider Dutch companies and organizations key players in turning sargassum into an opportunity." via LNV Attaché Netwerk
