The Dilemma of the Old or Archaic English Epoch and the New Modern English Era 2. The Best Epoch: Determining the "best" epoch of the English language is subjective and depends on one's perspective, interests, and objectives. Advocates of the old or archaic English epoch may appreciate its historical significance, linguistic richness, and cultural heritage, while proponents of the modern English era may value its accessibility, global reach, and adaptability to contemporary needs. Rather than viewing the old and modern epochs of English as competing entities, it's more productive to recognize their complementary roles in shaping the trajectory of the language. Studying Old English provides a deeper appreciation of the language's roots and evolution while embracing modern English enables effective communication and engagement in the global community. Conclusion: The dilemma of the old or archaic English epoch versus the new modern English era reflects the dynamic nature of language and the diverse interests of its users. I was able to share my dissertation research with FRCC staff and faculty for the first time today! The stories of some in the room were a vital part of my study and I can't thank them enough for their contributions. It was really amazing. Topic: Linguistic Servingness at an Emerging HSI Abstract (if you're curious): Staff in designated bilingual positions serve as cultural brokers - the bridge between the institution and the Spanish speaking community in accessing and navigating higher education systems.  In examining the literature, little has been written about how they view their work around linguistic servingness, how they are supported by their supervisor, or what linguistic servingness means.  The goal of this phenomenological qualitative study was to capture the stories of designated bilingual staff and those who have supervised these positions to understand their lived experiences, provide recommendations to the institution on how to support these positions, and define what linguistic servingness means to study participants.  For designated bilingual staff, working directly with students and families in their native language to overcome higher education barriers was the most rewarding part of their work, along with sharing their life experiences and college journey to create a space of confianza and sense of belonging. For both designated bilingual staff and supervisors, there was concern over having to validate the work that designated bilingual staff do, as well as frustration in feeling a sense of helplessness when advocacy efforts are unheard.

Here are some basic Spanish questions that come after greeting: ¿Cómo está usted? — How are you? (formal) ¿Cómo estás? — How are you? (informal) ¿Qué tal? — How are you? (informal) / What’s up? ¿Cómo te va? — How’s it going? ¿Qué haces? — What are you doing? ¿Qué pasa? — What’s happening? If someone asks you one of these questions, you can use the following conversational Spanish phrases: Bien, gracias — Good, thank you Muy bien — Very well Así, así — So, so Como siempre — As always And also don’t forget about this fundamental follow-up question: ¿Y tú? — And you? If you feel like it’s time to switch to English, you’re free to clarify whether the person you’re talking to speaks English or not. Just say “¿Habla inglés?” that is used for “Do you speak English?”.
