A Friday shout out to Hafsa Abdullahi (right), Field Coordinator for the USAID Bar ama Baro program in Somalia, during a visit to a model school in Baidoa. Hafsa and her colleagues have played pivotal roles in USAID’s Bar ama Baro’s success in Baidoa, South West State.   USAID’s Bar ama Baro (“teach or learn”) is an accelerated basic education program that increases access to quality education among out-of-school children and youth in target areas in 32 districts. Among its multiple goals is an effort to enroll and keep girls in classrooms. One tool: Female teachers. In general, fewer than 10% of Somali teachers are women. Under Bar ama Baro, more than 25% of teachers are women.   The 5-year program is implemented under the leadership of the Federal Government of Somalia’s Ministry of Education, Culture and Higher Education, in close collaboration with Federal Member States Ministries of Education. 🇨🇦 Excited to host a post-admission counseling session for our student Jeff, who has been accepted to Algoma University in Canada. We updated Jeff and his parents about new processes in place regarding PAL (Provincial Attestation Letter) and the next steps in the application process. Ensuring our students and parents are well-informed and supported at every step of the way. Here are the important details about PAL (Provincial Attestation Letter) for inclusion in your study permit application: 1. PALs are required for certain study permit applications and are limited in number, allocated based on each province's population share. 2. Masters and PhD students are exempt from needing a PAL. 3. The process to obtain a PAL is straightforward and efficient: a. After submitting the application, students receive a Letter of Acceptance (LOA) from the institution. b. Upon accepting the offer, students inform the institution and complete a request form. c. The institution notifies the province, and the PAL is then released to the institution to be shared with the student. 4. The responsibility for issuing PALs lies with both the institution and the province. Minister Mariatou Koné Launches Curricular Reform Process for Middle Schools On August 6, 2024, Mariatou Koné, Minister of National Education and Literacy, inaugurated the process of curricular reform for middle schools in Abidjan. This initiative reflects the President’s commitment to equitable, inclusive, and high-quality education for all students. The reform will align curricula with 21st-century skills and labor market demands, preparing students for a successful transition into adulthood and responsible citizenship. Ouattara Drissa, Acting Director of Pedagogy and Continuing Education, emphasized that the reform will produce reference documents aligned with educational goals and content. Through our afterschool programme, we provide a safe and supportive environment for over 200 children each year.
