LUXURY IS NOT ARROGANCE: I was recently subjected to a barrage of social media trolls. One in particular was from someone who claimed that running a luxury business and therefore not targeting everyone was "arrogant." Let’s set the record straight: luxury businesses are built on exclusivity. Targeting a niche market isn’t about arrogance—it's about understanding value and providing a unique experience that speaks to the discerning tastes of those who appreciate the finer things in life. While I understand that everyone is entitled to their opinion, this 'troll' reveals a fundamental misunderstanding of what it means to build a luxury brand—and more importantly, what it means to run a business with a strong, defined vision. The very essence of luxury lies in offering something rare, something that speaks to a specific audience who understands and appreciates the value of what you provide. It’s about creating an experience, not just a product, and cultivating a sense of distinction and pride for those who choose to invest in your brand or business. The notion that focusing on a particular niche or group is “arrogant” is unbelievably misguided. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. It takes deep insight and courage to stand firm in your brand’s identity and not chase after every trend or every customer. Luxury isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach. It’s about being deliberate and intentional with your offerings, focusing on quality over quantity, and committing to the kind of value that doesn’t require mass appeal to be successful. Why have we chosen not to franchise our venue styling business, but to offer a community-lead training programme instead? We've had no shortage of offers from franchising experts encouraging us to franchise Stressfree | The Venue Transformers. And it's clearly a business model that many investors understand and which has worked successfully for a great number of businesses. But it didn't sit well with us. When I started my wedding planning and venue styling business in 1995, I did it with minimal investment. I grew it slowly and steadily, taking my time to do the research and teach myself everything I needed to know. Since then it's grown organically. We've adapted as the market has changed. We've tried new ideas. We've expanded into markets we hadn't initially considered. As wedding planners, we became known as "the professional's professional". As venue stylists we've become the "go-to" for many venues, planners and suppliers. My "why" for having my own business wasn't to make more money. I gave up an extremely well paid job with great career prospects. It wasn't to work fewer hours and have more holidays. I was only 28, I was a grafter and enjoyed putting in crazy hours to make it a success. It was a lifestyle choice. I wanted to be in control of my own destiny, I wanted to feel that I'd created something on my own, and I wanted to be able to make my own decisions. Running a business is hard. Setting up a business from scratch is possibly harder still. But almost 30 years on, I have absolutely no regrets. I have so many incredible memories, I'm never short of a story to tell about my experiences, and I have learnt SO much about everything. So when we decided we wanted to pass on our knowledge and experience to a new generation, we chose to do this in the form of an affordable, on-line training programme. We want to attract like-minded self-starters who aren't afraid of hard work and appreciate the satisfaction of creating and growing something special that they can call their own. I'm not suggesting they need to put in crazy hours. And, depending on how they wish to structure and scale their business, they can of course make plenty of money in the process.
