4 I’s of Intervention: INTENT
When working with any client, the intent behind any strategy or technique explored should be clear. With the wrong intent behind the approach, SLPs can exacerbate stress and anxiety toward speaking, but with the proper intent and clear choices, people who stutter can approach daily situations with confidence.
💪 Empower clients
When strategies are taught to "mask" stuttering or hide one's identity as a person who stutters, it generally does not lead the individual to communication freedom.
As SLPs, we can explore strategies that empower individuals to speak freely, without masking or avoidance, instead of methods that aim to “fix” the stutter or disguise an individual’s voice.
🙌 Enable clients to approach words, people, and speaking situations with confidence and ease
Pushing an individual outside of their comfort zone can be counterproductive, leading to further fear or anxiety when speaking.
As SLPs, we can facilitate opportunities to gradually expand an individual’s comfort zone by taking risks with support little by little.
👀 Permit clients to show stuttering
People who stutter may regularly feel restricted in their speech by the expectations of non-stutterers. The pressure to appear fluent can be damaging to their confidence.
As SLPs, we have an opportunity to extend “permission” to stutter. Our approaches can help individuals understand that it’s okay to stutter, both in and out of the therapy room.
With the proper intent and viable choices underpinning our approaches to stuttering, we can encourage and empower our clients to speak with freedom, confidence, and enthusiasm, bringing them a better quality of life every day.
