✍️ "Practice makes progress, not perfection." ✍️ If you're an internationally educated nurse, you know how important effective communication is in your role. Here are three practical tips to boost your English communication skills right at work: Leverage “Teach-Back”: Ask patients to repeat information back to you to ensure they understand. It helps both you and them! Start Small: Practice one new medical term a day. Use it in conversation with colleagues, and you’ll see your vocabulary grow. Record & Reflect: Record yourself speaking about a medical topic, then listen back to hear areas for improvement. It might feel awkward at first, but it's so effective! 🎙️ Let’s turn practice into progress—one conversation at a time. 💬 🤝 Join our community of supportive healthcare communicators! As a medical professional, the words you choose matter. Phrases like “Wait a moment” or “This will hurt” might be clear, but they can come across as too basic. With a few simple changes, you can instantly sound more polished and professional. Instead of saying “Wait a moment,” try: “Please hold on for just a moment.” It’s smoother and more reassuring. Instead of “This will hurt,” say: “You may feel a little discomfort, but it won’t last long.” These small tweaks make a big impact on how patients perceive you—they hear confidence, care, and professionalism. Improving your communication doesn’t need to be complicated. Start with intentional word choices, and you’ll build trust while sounding more natural and polished. Ever felt that knot in your stomach when you can't find the right words during a crucial conversation? One of my learners, Blanca, a skilled nurse from Spain knew that feeling all too well, and struggled to get rid of it. Despite her impressive credentials and nursing knowledge, Blanca faced a significant challenge when she moved to the UK. Her struggle wasn't with her new role, but with the language. During one of her first patient consultations in the UK, a simple miscommunication led to a misunderstanding about the patient's medication. This not only risked the patient's health but also shook Blanca's confidence. Blanca realized that mastering English wasn't just about improving her vocabulary or grammar; it was about unlocking her full potential as a healthcare professional. That's when she reached out to me and she started on a journey to enhance her communication skills. Her results were transformative. Her ability to clearly explain complex medical conditions, provide detailed instructions, and build rapport with patients dramatically improved. Here are the 4 steps Blanca used to enhance her English Communication: 📌 Practice Active Listening: Focus on truly understanding what your patients and colleagues are saying. This helps in responding accurately and building trust. Ask questions to clarify what you have heard. 📌 Use Simple Language: Avoid medical jargon when speaking with patients. Clear and simple explanations can prevent misunderstandings. 📌 Engage in Continuous Learning: Take English language courses, attend workshops, or join discussion groups to keep improving your language skills. 📌 Embrace Feedback: Encourage feedback from patients and colleagues on your communication. Constructive criticism is a powerful tool for improvement. Effective communication in healthcare is more than just a skill; it's required if we are to maintain patient safety and gain professional success. Effective communication saves lives! #EffectiveCommunication #PatientCare #CareerGrowth

The OET writing task is a referral letter that a healthcare professional writes to another healthcare professional or patient. The time given to compose the referral letter is 45 minutes and the candidate needs to write a180-200 words letter. In the referral letter the candidate has to read the notes that talks about the condition of the patient and make a summary of those notes in sentence format and then write an advice to the receiver. The OET referral letter is profession specific , that is, if you are a pharmacist then you will need to write a letter explaining a medication you have prescribed ; if you are a nurse then you will have to write about how to care for your patient as nurse or refer your patient’s condition to another nurse or doctor and so on. Take care not to miss out on any details in the notes that is relevant to the subject of your letter. Be careful about the grammar, vocabulary, spellings and word limit.
