Friendly reminder: LGBTQ+ young people deserve to feel safe and respected in school 🌈 That’s why we created our guide for Creating Safe Spaces in School for LGBTQ+ Young People, aimed at giving allies resources to signal to LGBTQ+ young people that you are a safe person to turn to. While the majority of young people spend most of their waking hours in school, the education system can be a challenging place to navigate and explore identity for LGBTQ+ young people — especially if they experience harassment, discrimination, and lack of support & resources. Our allies provide important support for LGBTQ young people, especially in the face of increased marginalization. It’s up to teachers, administrators, and fellow students to find ways to show support, because the costs can be devastating. On #WorldMentalHealthDay, let's remember: mental health is intrinsically tied to the safety and affirmation of LGBTQ+ people — especially youth. Per @trevorproject, 39% of LGBTQ+ youth seriously considered attempting suicide in the past year. For queer youth of color, that number is even higher. But, trans and nonbinary youth who attend schools that affirm their gender report lower rates of attempting suicide. That's why we say: #SafeSchoolsSaveLives. That phrase guides our work at Garden State Equality. Nine out of every 10 LGBTQ+ youth said their well-being was negatively impacted due to recent politics this year. Last year, that number was just 1 in 3. This is why we fight every day to make sure schools stay safe and affirming for ALL students. [Image description: Graphic celebrating World Mental Health Day. The background is dark green and there are line-art drawings of flowers in each corner. Diagonally across the frame is a faint rainbow, in front of which is another line-art drawing, this time of one hand reaching down to help another inside a heart. Above the heart it says "World Mental Health Day" and below it is the Garden State Equality logo.] #LGBTQ #LGBT #queer #trans #transgender #NewJersey #NJ

According to a 2024 report from the Public Religion Research Institute, nearly 30% of Gen Z adults identify as LGBTQ+. When we talk about what it looks like to support and care for the next generations of our LGBTQ+ community, it is imperative that we recognize the unique needs of our young people who are coming of age in an era of more visibility than ever before—and a hostile political climate. We need to continue to make sure that LGBTQ+ young people are connected with supportive programs and services, both at school and in their local community, that can help them navigate their identities. We will continue to fight for full lived and legal equality so that LGBTQ+ young people learn about rather than experience discrimination in the classroom. #LGBTQ #Equality #ProtectLGBTQYouth #LGBTQYouth

According to an updated Youth Report from the HRC Foundation, 46.1% of LGBTQ+ youth report feeling unsafe in at least one school setting, while 53.9% of transgender and gender-expansive youth reported the same. The report goes on to note the statistics around what structures are in place to support students in feeling safe and schools are responding to bullying and other forms of physical and verbal harassment. At Educate, we work closely with our partner communities to ensure that schools are safe places for all students to thrive and grow. Sometimes this means having candid conversations around beliefs and how they show up in the classroom in support (or not) of our youth. This Pride month, we encourage you to do the same - ask the questions that need to be ask. Hold each other accountable to create spaces for our ALL of our youth that we know they deserve. #LGBTQ #LGBTQYouth #LGBTQPrideMonth #LGTBQPride #PrideMonth #ReflectEmpowerUnite https://lnkd.in/ezxifxhR

The research is clear: LGBTQ+ youth thrive when they have respect, love, and support from their families and communities, physical and emotional safety, and access to programs and supports consistent with their identity. LGBTQ+ youth face extreme barriers to their safety and well-being and in some places, daily assaults on their health. LGBTQ+ youth in foster care face additional barriers to accessing support, care, and having their identities affirmed. Youth and families do not get the support they need and experience harm from the system itself. We owe these young people so much more. https://loom.ly/gqaSDMk #economicjustice #healthjustice #familyautonomy #racialjustice #childwelfare #familysupport #family #mentalhealth #community #familylove #parentingsupport #communitysupport #mentalhealthawareness #youthlgbt #lgbt #lgbtq #queer #gay #pride #trans #lesbian #lgbtyouth #bi #transgender #lgbtqia #lgbtinformation #lgbtqrepresentation #lgbtqresources #lgbtcommunity #youth
