JNCASR and Hindustan Zinc Advance Zinc-Ion Batteries The Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research & Hindustan Zinc Limited has signed an MoU to advance zinc-ion battery technology. This collaboration aims to develop new zinc materials, enhance battery performance, and drive commercialization. Zinc-ion batteries, a low-cost alternative to lithium-ion, offer significant potential for large-scale Energy Storage & environmental benefits   Story Insights by Shreyanshi Pandey The MoU signed between JNCASR and ZHL aims to advance technological innovation in zinc-ion batteries so that they can be used as an alternative to lithium-ion batteries in BESS. India needs to reduce its BESS cost to half of its current price so that it proves a cost-effective alternative to coal-generated electricity when integrated with RE and the use of zinc-ion batteries could prove to be a good opportunity for this sector. India being the fourth largest producer of Zinc can reduce cost by not having to import lithium and Zinc will also be a safer option as it poses no fire risk. With technological advancement in the right direction, it could be a boon for the renewable energy sector in India to provide RTC supply when integrated with RE. Energy storage is a battleground of evolving technologies where only a few reach commercial scale. The world’s largest EV maker, BYD, broke ground earlier this year on a 30 GWh Sodium-ion battery (SIB) facility. Benchmark has reported the projected global capacity of SIB for 2030 is already above 150 GWh. In this article, the authors discuss why India should start considering investing in Sodium-ion battery technology, suitable application areas, and the inherent supply chain advantages. Unlike the current Lithium-ion supply chain, Sodium’s universal availability renders large-scale, cost-competitive refining feasible in almost any country with the right financial and technological muscle, write Venkat Rajaraman and Gautam Patil of Cygni Energy Private Limited .
