Exclusive research I contributed to as part of the Cybernews team has uncovered a massive data leak at MC2 Data, a background check firm, impacting one-third of US citizens. MC2 Data runs popular background check websites, such as: ⌨ PrivateRecords.net ⌨ PrivateReports.com ⌨ PeopleSearcher.com ⌨ PeopleSearchUSA.org The company left a 2.2TB database containing 106 million records of sensitive information accessible to anyone on the Internet. Does anyone else feel fatigued from the constant barrage of news that our personal information has been stolen? It's real - but don't ignore it! Especially when SSNs are involved, it's good to take measures to protect yourself. If you haven't gone to the 3 credit bureaus and frozen your credit, you should consider it. (it's free and only takes a few minutes) This week the news has been plastered with '2.9 billion social security numbers leaked'. This is actually old news - the information was stolen early this year by one hacker who attempted to sell the data starting back in April. Then in the past several days, that data set was leaked for free by another hacker, which is why it's back in the news again. The Verge points out some oddities with the data, suggesting that the data set may not be complete, and in some cases has been found to be inaccurate.
