The New Yorker article "Million Dollar Murray" (2006) by Malcolm Gladwell tells the story of Murray Barr, a homeless veteran in Reno, Nevada, who accumulated over $1 million in medical and social services costs over several years. The article highlights the limitations of managing homelessness through temporary shelters and services, rather than addressing the root causes of homelessness. The article argues that power law distribution supersedes standard distribution in understanding homelessness because: 1. A small percentage of homeless individuals (like Murray) consume a disproportionate amount of resources, driving up costs. 2. These individuals often have complex needs, requiring expensive interventions. 3. Standard distribution approaches assume homelessness is a normal, evenly distributed phenomenon, whereas power law distribution recognizes that a small elite (in this case, the most vulnerable homeless individuals) require targeted, intensive support. The article suggests that Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) is a more effective solution than managing homelessness through temporary shelters and services. PSH provides stable housing and wraparound support services, addressing the underlying causes of homelessness and reducing costly emergency interventions. By acknowledging the power law distribution of homelessness, policymakers can focus resources on the most vulnerable individuals, providing permanent solutions rather than temporary band-aids. This approach can help reduce overall costs and effectively address homelessness, rather than just managing it.

Are you a military veteran living in or around Lewiston, Idaho? You are not alone, and there are so many resources available for help. Here is a list of some resources available to veterans in or around the Lewiston region. Please let me know if I can expand this list. There's a program called Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) that can help with rent assistance, utility assistance, rapid rehousing of homeless veterans, gas vouchers, and up to $1,200 in automotive repairs. They will also help with legal assistance, such as evictions or debt collection, child support, and a few other things. That's just some of the services they offer. SSVF grantees vary depending on location. The Blue Mountain Action Council out of Walla Walla is an amazing group that serves a few regionally nearby communities. Community Action Partnership of Lewiston is an SSFV grantee and case management location. https://lnkd.in/gyvmWAvG The Salvation Army in Lewiston also has a Veterans Services program, accessible via the link below, or by calling the local Salvation Army. https://lnkd.in/gFvqVZqr Again, you are not alone, and if you're in need of help, that's perfectly okay. Times are hard for everyone. As a community we have to love compassionately and help our neighbors. Additionally, calling 211 will give you an option for Veteran services. I highly recommend starting with contacting your local VA representative or advocate. They will be able to better help you navigate potential resources, and find more that I don't know about. #military #veteran #socialservices #communityresources #public #gethelp #veterancrisis #crisismanagement #billassistance #legalhelp #lewiston #idaho #lewistonidaho #clarkston #va #help #publichealth #lcvalley

As veteran homelessness rises in Ottawa, organizations are preparing to tackle this urgent issue. Key actions include increasing services, fostering collaboration among agencies, and focusing on prevention. Raising awareness is crucial to garner community support and advocating for long-term solutions like affordable housing and targeted mental health services. Addressing this crisis requires a comprehensive approach that meets both immediate and lasting needs. #VeteranSupport #HomelessnessPrevention #Ottawa #CommunityEngagement #AffordableHousing #MentalHealth #SocialImpact
We're proud of the work that our member Veterans' House Canada does to get former Canadian Armed Forces members off the streets and into permanent housing. The most recent point-in-time count found that about 4% of those homeless in Ottawa are veterans.

Jonathan Castillo US Army Warrior Rescue (501c3 Nonprofit) Heard something yesterday in regards to PTS/PTSD that’s been on my mind and kept me up all night: Cast take for my active duty folks/vets: You don’t have to see “combat” to have/had stressors in your life or don’t have/had to see “combat” to “talk to somebody.” Sometimes life sucks, it’s stressful at times, go talk to somebody if you need to vent. The military has resources for everyone, they do, leaders look for them and teach/help our folks. If your folks get “turned back” don’t sit back and do nothing, if you do nothing, you are the problem. Stop, listen to understand, not to answer back, understand the situation and take action. Take your ID Card out of your computer, get up and do something. They came to your door for a reason. If you are in uniform discrediting our military and available resources, and haven’t done anything to address the problem/issue, you are the problem too, I said it. If you think leading soldiers stops at 1700, we need to talk. If anybody out there needs help and has reached tracer burn out, call me, don’t Facebook call me, call my personal cell number: 512-289-7559 I’m not going to save the universe but I’m going to die trying, who’s coming? #lostigres #loveendlessly #strongertogether #theyarewatching #dobetter #ivebeenmentoredbygiants #hondotxhasmyheart #sgmapproved

We’re building something more than just a brand with a product to sell. Behind that product there’s a culture, and a community, and a philanthropy that’s getting involved with veterans, law enforcement, fire departments, nurses, etc. This brand stands for something, and that something is the patriotic nature of this country that these groups sacrifice for. It’s always struck me how powerful of a choice it is for a young man to decide he’s going to lay down his life for this country and join the military. The same goes for deciding to become a fireman, or a police officer, or a medical worker. Each of these requires the sacrifice of putting the country, community, etc before yourself. That’s patriotism, and it’s powerful stuff. With Patriot Hard Seltzer we’re giving back via donations to help these groups, honoring those who serve on our cans, and getting involved in the communities to help make a difference. We are building something much bigger than just a 5% alcohol whiskey hard seltzer. It’s a movement. #patriotseltzer #whiskey #whiskeyseltzer #hardseltzer #business #businessowner #entrepreneur #military #lawenforcement #police #firedepartment #firefighter #nurse #nursing #emt #ems #paramedic #america #freedom #patriotic #usa
