Why Construction Labor Retention is More than Just a “Gen Z” Trend Employee turnover in the construction industry is a rising concern, and it’s no secret that the impact can be severe. There’s a lot of advice out there focused on adapting to younger generations’ needs, but in reality, the desire for motivation, purpose, and recognition isn’t new. It’s human. When workers feel valued and inspired, they’re more productive and more willing to commit. Retention doesn’t mean jumping through hoops to please everyone but rather creating an environment that’s inclusive, supportive, and forward-thinking for all. Let’s get practical. Reducing turnover starts with actively working to increase retention. Read this blog post if this is something you and your business are interested in. https://lnkd.in/g6hY2-QW

🔷 Rediscovering the Power of Direct Labour in Construction Part 2: Final Post (Day 16): A Call to Action—Is Direct Labour the Future of Construction? 🔷 Part 2: Highlights of the Book Building Excellence: Rediscovering the Power of Direct Labour in Modern Construction 1. Introduction Direct labour, which involves hiring workers directly rather than subcontracting, was once the standard in the West. However, perceptions of flexibility and cost savings led to its decline. With rising costs, quality concerns, and scheduling complexities, this book examines how direct labour can again become a viable solution. 2. The Benefits of Direct Labour 🔷 Cost Efficiency: Eliminates contractor markups, reduces administrative costs, and improves budget control. 🔷 Quality Control: Direct accountability and consistent work standards lead to superior outcomes. 🔷 Schedule Predictability: A dedicated workforce reduces delays and ensures reliability. 🔷 Safety Standards: Consistent safety protocols enhance compliance and reduce accident-related costs. 🔷 Workforce Loyalty: Stable careers and training programs foster loyalty and motivation. 3. Challenges and Mitigation While direct labour offers many advantages, it also presents challenges such as upfront costs, regulatory requirements, and recruitment difficulties. The book outlines strategies to address these, including phased implementation, pilot projects, and leveraging digital tools for workforce management. 4. A Model for Reintroducing Direct Labour 🔷 Phased Approach: Start small with pilot projects and scale up based on success. 🔷 Incentive Programs: Motivate workers with bonuses tied to productivity, safety, and quality. 🔷 Training and Development: Build a skilled workforce with robust training programs. 🔷 Digital Tools: Optimise workforce management with modern project management software. 🔷 Final Thoughts As highlighted in Building Excellence: Rediscovering the Power of Direct Labour in Modern Construction, this approach is not simply a return to traditional practices—it is a reinvention of how we build for the future. With careful planning, innovative management, and a commitment to excellence, direct labour can once again become the cornerstone of a revitalised construction industry. This vision will be explored further in the book, scheduled for publication in 2025.

Your losing construction workers? It’s your fault. Let’s stop pretending this is some mystery. Workers aren’t walking off the job because they don’t care—they’re leaving because you haven’t given them a reason to stay. 👎Disrespect on the jobsite? That drives people out. 👎Lack of growth opportunities? Workers will find somewhere else that values their skills. 👎Unsafe working conditions? They won’t stick around to risk their health when they’re treated like they’re replaceable. You can’t just throw a paycheck at people and expect loyalty. 🤦♂️ Construction workers are the backbone of every project, but all too often, they’re treated as disposable. And guess what? They know it. If you’re losing good workers, don’t blame the market. Don’t blame the generation. Blame yourself. The solution? ✅ Respect your workers—genuinely. ✅ Invest in their growth with leadership training and career paths. ✅ Provide supportive environments that make people want to stay. Retention isn’t a worker problem—it’s a leadership problem. So, do you agree? Repost, Like and share your with your thoughts. #Disruptor #Construction

The construction industry is facing a significant labor crunch, with an estimated shortage of over 500,000 workers in 2024. According to Associated Builders and Contractors, the industry will need to attract an additional 501,000 workers on top of normal hiring to meet demand. This shortage is attributed to various factors, including retirement, mega projects, and cultural influences that encourage fewer young people to enter the skilled trades. With more than one-fifth of construction workers aged 55 or older, the industry faces a concerning loss of experienced workers to retirement. As the industry navigates this challenge, construction business owners and industry leaders must work together to attract new talent and retain experienced workers. Skilled workers, especially those with specialized skills can quickly find another company to work for if you are not providing a safe and productive work environment. Today’s workforce is not just seeking a paycheck, they want more personalized solutions and support to work collaboratively and more efficiently. With Jonas’ automated and integrated construction management software, you can support your staff by streamlining workflows, ensuring on-time and accurate payment for their work and empowering them to provide higher quality work.
