🌍 Harnessing the Power of Earth Observation Technology for Climate Adaptation   Beginning of last week, Anika Ruess and Alex Chunet from the ESA GDA team had the privilege of co-hosting a webinar with the Adaptation Fund (AF) with fruitful discussions on how Earth Observation (EO) tools can drive impactful climate adaptation solutions in development operations. With a fantastic turnout and engaging discussions, the webinar showcased practical EO applications in various sectors. 🌟 Exciting news from Anumá Aerospace Corporation! They've been awarded a grant of $649,977 by the Department of Commerce, specifically the NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration. Anuma Aerospace is pioneering the Persistent-Elevated Gas-Free Aerostatic Sensor Utility System (PEGASUS), a revolutionary data buoy in the sky. This system will continuously collect and transmit weather data from the marine atmospheric boundary layer, utilizing their patented Partial-Vacuum Lift cell for aerostatic lift. This innovation promises long-term persistence and eliminates the need for non-renewable helium gas. #Innovation #Aerospace 🔍 The research falls under the category of National Marine Fisheries Service and Oceanic and Atmospheric Research. The project is set to last for 24 months, starting on September 1, 2024, and concluding on August 31, 2026. Session Title: Moving towards an ecosystem-based approach in measuring and delivering net gains for biodiversity We have spent decades focusing on self-limiting species-related and coarse habitat indicators to define and measure key biodiversity features in IA. These have been applied to measure significance of values of biodiversity and the associated potential risks of impacts. Technology advances such as environmental DNA, acoustics soundscapes and earth observation tools now enable us to get a far more comprehensive understanding of the composition, structure and function of ecosystems. We need to transition to a more holistic approach to both measuring and monitoring biodiversity if we are to apply net gain and nature positive principles in biodiversity performance management. Not only is this fundamental to tracking the health, function and integrity of ecosystems but also the inherent ecosystem services values – thus enabling us to better understand our dependencies as well as our impacts on biodiversity. Essential to satisfy requirements of CSRD and TNFD. Introducing #NGAWrapped – our own articles! Before we enter 2025, let’s look back at 2024! NGA authored many articles about our mission! Here are a few of the highlights. 🖥️ NGA launched an AI accreditation pilot program and the GEOINT Responsible AI Training program – GREAT – to enhance AI trustworthiness and reliability. 🇪🇨 NGA helped fend off an erosion crisis in Ecuador that threatened roads, pipelines, homes and an energy source providing over 30% of the country’s power. 🧲 Made in partnership with the UK and NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration, the World Magnetic Model is a digital infrastructure that is key to global navigation and corrects compass readings around the globe. ❄️As strategic competition heats up in the Arctic as sea ice melts, NGA provides #GEOINT to the United States Department of Defense to maintain awareness of this increasingly important domain.

It was great to hear the conversation in this fireside chat at the #swfsummit24 despite the very early hour here in the UK. Important themes of transparency, communication, and coordination were articulated clearly and with optimism. It was especially pleasing to hear Paul Bate mention the great work being led by colleagues at the University of Southampton on atmospheric ablation. There was mention of "orbital carrying capacity" too, which is also an important topic, but one I believe is widely misunderstood. There are many lessons that the space sector can take from other disciplines where the carrying capacity concept has been studied in detail. Two come to mind: "carrying capacity" is not a scientific concept it is a management tool; and it is not possible to capture the complexity of environmental management within a single number. We need to rethink our approach to this, particularly if we want it to serve policy and regulation.

The fascinating World Magnetic Model (WMM) is a standard model of the core and large-scale crustal magnetic field. It is used extensively for navigation and in attitude and heading referencing systems by the UK Ministry of Defence, the US Department of Defense, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO). The model is produced by the United Kingdom’s Defence Geographic Centre (DGC) and the United States’ National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) and.
