As we recognize School Health Week, it’s important to reflect on the stark realities facing children globally—and especially here in South Africa—regarding their health and nutrition. Two major issues stand out: childhood obesity and malnutrition. While these problems may seem like opposite ends of a spectrum, they share a root cause—poor diet quality. This week serves as a critical reminder that the health and future of millions of children are in jeopardy and that schools can either be part of the solution or an aggravating factor in this crisis. Today marks #WorldObesityDay, a crucial reminder of the pressing need to address the global epidemic of #obesity and its associated health risks. Thanks to the Global Obesity Coalition, comprised of the World Obesity Federation, UNICEF, and World Health Organization, for bringing us together this morning for the global kick-off highlighting the increasing relevance of obesity amongst youth and impoverished communities! According to the World Obesity Atlas, obesity is a leading preventable cause for numerous varieties of chronic dietary diseases, including type II diabetes, stroke, coronary heart disease, and cancer. Disconcertingly, the report projects the prevalence of obesity to continue to exponentially rise over the next 15 years to over a billion new cases between 2020 and 2035. By 2035, global obesity is expected to cost an estimated USD $4 trillion. As we acknowledge this day, it's imperative to recognize the power of proactive measures regarding food security and adequate nutrition in combating this issue. As professionals in various fields, we have a responsibility to address obesity by promoting education and advocating for policies that support healthy environments. Let's use this day as an opportunity to engage in meaningful conversations, share resources, and work together to create a healthier future for all. Together, we can make a difference! #WorldObesityDay #FoodIsMedicine #HealthEquity #NutritionMatters 🌍🌱

With nearly half of U.S. adults facing pre-diabetes or diabetes, the need to rethink our approach to health has never been more urgent. Current dietary guidelines, though well-intentioned, may fall short in reversing declining metabolic health. Their impact reaches beyond individual choices, influencing institutions like schools, the military, and elder care. But there’s hope. By empowering individuals to make informed food choices, we can foster a shift towards personal responsibility and optimal metabolic health. When we prioritize what truly supports long-term well-being, we pave the way for meaningful change—regardless of official recommendations. It’s time to start thinking differently about our health and the role that nutrition policies play in it. Watch our latest video for more: https://lnkd.in/gTmrX8m8

With the global obesity epidemic ever expanding, people have become more conscious of the need to live healthier lives. In terms of the contribution from our diet, we don’t believe our many chronic health problems (including obesity!) are coming from how much we eating, but more in relation to WHAT we are eating! Research over the last few decades has established that heavy consumption of ultra-processed foods is strongly linked with an increased risk in most chronic diseases including heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, lung disease, Alzheimer’s disease, cancer and obesity. If you have any queries or want to find out more about how we may be able to support your nutritional needs, please feel free to contact us at evorehab@gmail.com #betterhumans #osteopathyworks #movementspecialist #sportphysio #healthadvice #painfreeliving #exercisetherapy #wholistichealth #wholebodyhealth #nutritionalmedicine #movementislife #womanshealth #healtheducation #wellnesscentre #healyourbody #injuryrecovery #integrativehealth #stretchingexercises #performancecoach #physicalfitness #wellnesstips #mindbodyconnection #betterhealth #sportsinjury #healthmatters #painfree #healthytips #rehabilitation

New study released by The Lancet shows that more than 1 billion people in the world are now living with obesity. Worldwide, obesity among adults has more than doubled since 1990, and has quadrupled among children and adolescents (5 to 19 years of age). The data also show that 43% of adults were overweight in 2022. Obesity is defined in adults as having a BMI greater or equal to 30kg/m2. The World Health Organization (WHO), Director-General, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said, "This new study highlights the importance of preventing and managing obesity from early life to adulthood, through diet, physical activity, and adequate care, as needed.” Dr Francesco Branca, Director of World Health Organization’s Nutrition and Food Safety Department and one of the co-authors of the study, stated, "There are significant challenges in implementing policies aimed at ensuring affordable access to healthy diets for all and creating environments that promote physical activity and overall healthy lifestyles for everyone." As health and fitness professionals we are in the best position to help reduce this alarming global epidemic.
