This article focuses on human foods but has some real implications for the pet food industry and canned vs. flexible packaging [thanks to my colleague Jennifer Mapes Christ for the initial post]
So this is interesting... and one of the reasons why there are big benefits to the interdisciplinary work that goes on between the staff working on The Freedonia Group's market leading packaging research and on Packaged Facts' forward-looking food and beverage analysis. You get both angles. For instance, we know that consumers value the convenience and long shelf life of canned food... and while there is a packaging sustainability story to tell, it's either not getting through or factors such as the value price point of many canned goods simply matter more at this point (only 20% say they buy canned goods because they are easy to recycle). https://lnkd.in/efJHBRph
Can canned food outlast competition from flexible plastic alternatives?

Packaging to sweeten the deal! 🍫😊 Our Key Account Manager Michele Tamburello, who accompanied the packaging project for @kakaomischa, agrees. It's not just the cocoa beans that are characterised by high quality, but also our packaging, as the selected ‘Crush Cacao’ cardboard material consists of up to 15% cocoa bean shells that would otherwise end up as waste. This makes the packaging not only a real eye-catcher, but also innovative and sustainable. 👀🌱 ‘In the interests of sustainability, we also dispensed with the usual PE coating,’ explains Michele Tamburello. Instead, we use a sustainable coating that also fulfils the strict hygiene regulations for direct contact with food. 🤗 #karlknauer #karlknauerkg #impressivelydifferent #packaging #promotionalproducts #giftpackaging #machineengineering #innovation #sustainability #packaging #manufacturer #packagingexpert #kinzigtal #blackforest #cocoa #kakaomischa #project #cocoabeans #sustainable #eye-catcher #innovative

PEF, new partnership with Albert Heijn supermarkets for the alternative material for food #packaging with environmental credentials. Albert Heijn, one the biggest supermarket chains in Europe, part of the Ahold Delhaize group (€90B revenues and 400.000 employees), is partnering with Avantium, a chemical technology company focused on renewables, to launch the world's first #PEF packaging for supermarket products. What is PEF? PEF, known as polyethylene furanoate, is a plant-based, #circular material that is nontoxic. Unlike the current high-performance materials for food and beverage items, like PET (polyethylene terephthalate), PEF possesses stronger properties such as biodegrading at a faster rate and withstanding higher temperatures (glass transition temperature). It also extends the shelf life of food and beverages, therefore helping to reduce food waste. To enable scale-up, Avantium is constructing the first commercial plant for furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA), a building block for PEF, with production starting this year, at Chemie Park Delfzijl in the Netherlands. The plant will have a capacity of up to 5,000 tonnes annually and will produce FDCA from sugars with its patented YXY technology. Marit van Egmond (photo), CEO of Albert Heijn, comments: "Albert Heijn wants to pass on a liveable earth to future generations. To make that possible, one of our goals is to make packaging more sustainable. Besides packaging reduction, recyclability and reuse, fossil-free materials are high on our wish list." PEF is about to move forward from being a promising lab-material to being an industrial reality, able to offer biodegradability, extended shelf life, and reduction of food waste. Every step that increases our #sustainability choices is something to celebrate. Drone-video shows plant construction progress as of March 20th, 2024. https://lnkd.in/dStrCYcX Tom van Aken

🎉 Kudos to MasterFoods for Innovation! 🎉 https://lnkd.in/gxqXrcPX I was thrilled to read about MasterFoods trialing new paper-based packaging for their products – a bold move demonstrating their commitment to reducing single-use plastics. 👏 Innovation like this is essential as we navigate the complex path to a more sustainable future. That said, while the shift to paper-based solutions is commendable, I can’t help but raise a potential concern: What happens to the tomato sauce residue in the paper recycling stream? 🍅🧴 Paper recycling facilities are often not equipped to handle food contamination, and the presence of residues can compromise the recyclability of the material. This raises a larger question about whether such solutions inadvertently shift environmental burdens from one stream to another. We’re eager to learn more from this trial, as the insights gained will no doubt shape the future of how single-use foodservice items are recovered and recycled. Understanding these real-world outcomes is key to ensuring that innovations in fiber based packaging deliver the intended environmental benefits. 🌍 I’d love to hear others' thoughts: 👉 Are there emerging solutions to address food contamination in paper recycling? Let’s keep pushing the boundaries of sustainable packaging, but also ensure we’re asking the hard questions. 🌍💡 #Sustainability #PackagingInnovation #CircularEconomy #RecyclingChallenges
