As a board member, I know just how far a donation of $10, $15 can go to help more youth. The clubs offer a place for growing, learning and playing. BGCSPS also supports amazing things outside of the clubs including Teen Mental Health First Aid training - a program that coaches teens in grades 10-12 or ages 15-18 on how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental health and substance use, challenges among their friends and peers. 🌟 Watching the Olympics? At the 2024 Olympics in Paris, several athletes have shared powerful stories of overcoming adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), such as mental health issues and financial hardships, deeply resonating with the mission of Prevent Child Abuse America. Simone Biles, who won gold in gymnastics, had a challenging upbringing marked by instability and foster care before being adopted by her grandparents. Despite these hardships, Biles's success underscores the impact of a supportive and loving environment. Prevent Child Abuse America aims to ensure every child has a safe and nurturing home, much like the environment that allowed Biles to flourish and become one of the greatest gymnasts in history. Noah Lyles, gold medalist in the men's 100m, courageously opened up about his struggles with depression and anxiety. His journey from battling mental health challenges to becoming an Olympic champion underscores the transformative power of support and resilience. Just as Prevent Child Abuse America provides crucial resources and interventions to support children's mental health and well-being, Lyles benefitted from similar support systems, enabling him to thrive despite his challenges. Lydia Jacoby faced financial challenges growing up in a small town in Alaska. Despite limited resources, she secured a gold medal in swimming. Her story exemplifies how determination and community support can help overcome financial barriers. Prevent Child Abuse America’s mission to ensure children grow up in nurturing environments mirrors the support Jacoby received from her community, helping her achieve her dreams despite financial constraints. These narratives highlight the importance of creating supportive environments for children, much like the mission of Prevent Child Abuse America. By ensuring children have access to the resources they need to thrive, we can help children overcome adversity and achieve their full potential. Imagine a world where all schools follow trauma-informed, neuroscience-aligned, neurodiversity-affirming, relationship-driven, and collaborative approaches. At the Alliance Against Seclusion and Restraint, we are working tirelessly to make that world a reality. Seclusion and restraint are harmful practices that affect numerous individuals and families, particularly those with children with disabilities, Black and brown children, and children with a trauma history. Our mission is to reduce and eliminate these practices and ensure safer schools for students, teachers, and staff. We need your help to continue this critical work. Did you know that eating disorder-related visits have more than doubled in teens under 17 in the last five years (NBC, 2022). From 2018-2022, eating disorder-related health visits for youth jumped more than 107% across all disorders. Despite these alarming statistics, so many of the families impacted struggle to get their children the care they desperately need to heal, due to barriers like cost and accessibility. Our programs allow teens to access the care they need, regardless of cost and we want to expand our programs and double the number of teens we can serve in the next year! So far for #GivingTuesday today, our amazing community has helped us raise $8,045 to help more teen clients find lasting healing and recovery. I was delighted to be invited by Teresa Jennings to talk at the launch of the Brathay Bursary last night alongside Garryck Spurgeon-Price, my friend and fellow ALP graduate. We shared our own experience of Brathay residential’s and the impact it’s had on our lives but also reflected on the importance of these experiences for young people. I’d like to share some of those reflections here… 🍃Young people today are facing extraordinary pressures. From education and employment challenges, to the impact of the cost of living crisis on their personal and family lives, and constant exposure to an evolving technological world. Outdoor residential’s provide a break away from everyday pressures or distractions, allowing young people dedicated time to focus on freedom, expression, and exploration. 🍃Spending time outdoors is proven to have both mental and physical benefits. We cannot underestimate the impact of building these connections from an early age. Ultimately this understanding comes from experience, and residential’s help children to form the habit of enjoying time outdoors. 🍃Young people are drawn to seeking risk. This is part of the natural stages of development a child moves through as they grow. Unfortunately there is a lack of space and opportunity for young people to fulfil this need which can lead them into unhealthy or unsafe behaviours. Outdoor residential’s provide the perfect alternative by facilitating healthy risk taking in a safe environment. 🍃The challenges and activities that form an outdoor residential allow young people to see their skills outside of external recognition. They are encouraged to reflect on team tasks and how they and others achieved their goal. This is not about ‘who reached the summit first’. It is focused on who spotted an upcoming difficulty, who helped navigate the solution, who communicated this to the group, who helped the team stay motivated, or who supported others? Recognising contributions and skills beyond traditional academic areas is both inspiring and important for building self-esteem and confidence in all young people. The Brathay bursary will ensure more young people benefit from these life changing experiences, regardless of location, background, or financial circumstances.
