It's been decades since we've seen a new C-level role widely adopted in businesses globally, not since the advent of the Chief Technology Officer has there been so much buzz around the C-suite. Today, however, we're seeing the rise of the Chief Sustainability Officer (CSO). A Chief Sustainability Officer is a senior executive responsible for overseeing and implementing a company’s sustainability strategy and initiatives. Their role includes developing and implementing policies, programs, and projects that promote environmental, social, and economic sustainability. They also report on the company’s sustainability performance and engage stakeholders on sustainability issues, typically in the form of ESG reports. They work closely with other departments and business units to integrate sustainability into core business operations and ensure the company meets its sustainability goals and commitments. Think this might be a career path for you, or someone you know? Check out our latest article below! What is the future of the Chief Sustainability Officer role, if there is one? Will it become obsolete, or will it remain core to the organizational structure? “Rather than further integration, the CSO’s role will gradually disappear from the C-suite. As sustainability becomes a standard part of all functions, the need for a dedicated executive to advocate for it diminishes. Advocacy is no longer the primary focus.” We bring you fresh research and expert insights from Mike Bascombe, ESG and Sustainability Practice Lead at VantagePoint. Fundamentals of Stakeholder Engagement in Sustainability 🌎 Sustainability requires a collaborative approach that considers the perspectives of various stakeholders to develop realistic and scalable solutions. Programs and strategies aimed at addressing social and environmental issues effectively rely on comprehensive stakeholder input. By integrating these diverse viewpoints, strategies become more grounded and adaptable to real-world challenges. Stakeholder engagement extends beyond simple communication. It involves creating an ecosystem of trust and collaboration where insights are shared, and mutual understanding is built. This practice ensures that sustainability efforts are aligned with the needs and expectations of employees, customers, suppliers, communities, investors, and regulators. Feedback loops play an essential role in refining sustainability initiatives. Channels such as advisory boards, surveys, and strategic partnerships allow for continuous input and adjustment. This adaptability leads to programs that are more resilient and capable of evolving in response to changing social and environmental landscapes. Effective engagement helps mitigate risks and uncover opportunities that may not be visible without stakeholder interaction. It supports the co-creation of solutions that not only align with business objectives but also contribute positively to broader societal goals. The success of sustainability programs is amplified when stakeholders see their input reflected in outcomes. Prioritizing stakeholder engagement builds strong, enduring relationships that enhance the credibility and impact of sustainability initiatives. A structured approach to engaging stakeholders ensures that actions taken are comprehensive and effective, driving meaningful progress toward social and environmental resilience. It was a real privilege yesterday to chair, in partnership with Harry Friend and Hedley May, a webinar on the rise of the Chief Sustainability Officer, with expert contributions from Jaclyn Kaminski-Beneche, Illana Adamson and Rob Colmer. We covered a huge amount of ground on how to make the CSO role and sustainability functions work well. Here were my key outtakes: Start with clarity on objectives - how you set up a sustainability function should be driven by clarity on its role(s) within the business; Buy-in from the top - success disproportionately rests on sponsorship from the senior team, ideally the CEO, and a properly engaged and informed board; Relationship building is key - sustainability and technical expertise matters, but our experts found that the most important skills a CSO must deploy are those needed to artfully collaborate and build coalitions across functions and with key stakeholders outside of the business; and, The role is broad - setting strategy, working with stakeholders, holding the organisation to account for delivery, compliance and reporting...the CSO must be able to wear lots of hats and spins lots of plates (I mean metaphorically...). The role requires real resilience and the ability to recognise that one person can't do and know it all - lean on experts and partners within and outside of your organisation. With the right objectives, a thoughtful approach to how to build and support the sustainability function, and sustainability leadership with a broad range of technical and 'soft' skills, we can build resilient organisations fit for a net zero, biodiversity and people positive future.

Sustainability is important for business aiming to thrive in today's world. It is not a woke-trope but has positive impacts for ones bottom line and also means we can move forward in a world that will continue to exist. We know that effective sustainability starts with collaboration across all stakeholders, from employees to suppliers. By embedding sustainability into every decision, companies not only meet regulations but also foster long-term trust and loyalty. Companies that engage with stakeholders will always be set up for success when their decisions come under scrutiny. #Sustainability #Collaboration #Impact
