We have ambitious goals. There are strong laws, policies, and investments in infrastructure being developed at a national level to support them. However, in order to be translated into real change on-the-ground, national policies must be paired with evidence-based, scalable grassroots programming that addresses the root causes of FGM and child marriage. "Through a case study of self-governing houseless encampments in Portland, Oregon, the article advances a relational analysis of property and citizenship to show how self-governing houseless communities are denied key privileges of citizenship that democratic self-governance is intended to realize. In doing so, the case study examines the very tradeoffs houseless encampment residents must make when living in an encampment. The paper ends suggesting that Portland’s encampment model allows us to more clearly see the consequences of establishing collective rights to access property within liberal property systems, and from this, where political and scholarly attention ought to be placed to better protect houseless people through a more democratic right to remain." #sanctioned #encampments #rights #homelessness

As a Real Estate Broker, we need to do better to protect all families against bias and discrimination. Decent affordable housing is vital to communities and to our future. Affordable housing can't be financed. Most agents don't want to work in it with families who purchase affordable housing. Is it an appraisal issue or a financing issue or an industry issue? We need to reset standards for financing, purchasing and develop a more attainable program than the 203k to remove barriers to home ownership while providing education and resources for home maintenance and self sufficiency. 🖤
