As we approach the International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste, I’m extra reminded of our shared responsibility to protect the global food supply chain. According to Eurostat, Europe loses 58 million tons of food annually, while millions go hungry. Globally, 13.2% of food is lost between harvest and retail, and 19% is wasted in households, food services, and retail. This has devastating effects on food security, our economy, and the environment. On this International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste 2024, we highlight the urgent need for financing and innovative solutions to tackle this global issue. Reducing food loss and waste is essential to achieving our climate goals, advancing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and building resilient, sustainable food systems. When food is wasted, so are the resources used to produce it—water, land, energy, labor, and capital. Additionally, food waste contributes to greenhouse gas emissions, fueling climate change. Together, we must embrace new technologies and practices that manage food quality and reduce waste. Whether through e-commerce platforms, mobile food processing systems, or innovative local solutions, it's time to transform how we handle food, from farm to fork. Food Loss vs. Food Waste: There's a crucial distinction between food loss and food waste: ➞ Food Waste, on the other hand, occurs at the consumer level. This includes food that is thrown away at homes, restaurants, or grocery stores because it is past its expiration date or simply not consumed. ➞ Food Loss refers to food that is lost during production, processing, or transportation before reaching the consumer. This could include crops that are not harvested due to market conditions. Why does it matter? This difference is not just semantic; understanding it can help us tackle the global food crisis more efficiently.                                                                                     At ECIi, our goal is to minimize food loss by up to 50%, conserving resources like water and energy. water, dirt, energy and the overall environment. Some interesting (and shocking) facts about food waste: - 2.5 billion tonnes of food – nearly 40% of food produced globally – never gets eaten - 10% of all global greenhouse gas emissions and around a quarter of all fresh water use can be attributed to food loss and waste - Food loss and waste costs upwards of $1 trillion each year and affects an estimated 2.4 billion people facing moderate to severe food insecurity But despite the massive impact of food waste, efforts to address it have tended to fall short – often because the financial costs have been undervalued. Transporting frozen foods globally accounts for as much as 5% of global energy needs and 2.5% of total greenhouse gas emissions. That's why we have re-examined and modernised long-standing cold chain methods. Research shows that a minor adjustment in the freezing temperature – just three degrees Celsius from -18C to -15C – can significantly reduce emissions without compromising the safety of food. To create this change, we are developing a roadmap and taking the necessary steps to achieve our goal, but we need your participation to make it a reality.
