The electric arc inside a switch is produced when the switch contacts are separated to interrupt the flow of electrical current. When contacts move to open, electricity still flows through the space between them. When electrical current passes through the space between the contacts, it can ionize air, creating an electric arc. The electric arc is maintained by the energy released by electrical current, which heats and ionizes the air further. The electric arc can be extremely hot and can release intense light and heat.
