If you are educating your child in NZ it may pay you to read the OECD's report on New Zealand for 2024 - snapshot from its executive summary below. Never under-estimate the power of a teacher's expectation, or a principal's belief that there is excellence in everyone. The lack of expectation of talent, achievement and success, and explicit mis-categorisation of students' abilities, because teachers are insufficiently adept at relating to culturally diverse students is an explicit failure in teacher training, school culture and ultimately leadership. Less branding, less rhetoric more mahi needed here...

Bill Walsh's "The Score Takes Care of Itself" is an annual read for me, highlighting the importance of focusing on the process over the outcomes—a principle I find relevant to teaching (and life in general). After a discussion on mid and end-of-year exams with my senior Literature students, one quote particularly resonated: "Concentrate on what will produce results rather than on the results, the process rather than the prize." This year, I've decided to apply Walsh's philosophy more deliberately in with my senior classes, with a focus on the processes and skills required for students to achieve their best. The aim is to encourage students to find their own voices and foster original thinking by embracing a student-centered approach in pedagogical instruction. I aim to guide the classroom towards outcomes naturally emerging from our collective effort and engagement, sometimes despite the extensive syllabus we have to cover (teachers of all levels understand this balance!) For those who share a passion for sports and are intrigued by the parallels between coaching, organisational and educational leadership, Walsh's book is an insightful read that I highly recommend.
