Call for Proposals: Art as Advocacy for Civil Society and Human Rights In an era where civil society faces unprecedented threats, from legislative crackdowns to physical attacks, the need to advocate for its value and role is more crucial than ever. CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation seeks collaborative proposals from artists and activists to harness the power of visual arts (and other formats) to creatively argue for the importance of civil society and human rights. Ten selected projects will receive up to £4,000 each to support new arts-based work or enhance ongoing initiatives. Proposals should articulate the case for civil society in compelling, emotionally resonant ways, counter populist and authoritarian narratives, and explore innovative and proactive responses to contemporary challenges. Submit your proposal by 15 September 2024 to artrightstruth-project@york.ac.uk #CivicTech #Africa #CallForProposals #CivilSociety #Activism

Democracy remains a dynamic and evolving system, continually striving to balance the ideals of freedom, equality, and justice. While it is not without flaws, its emphasis on popular sovereignty and the protection of individual rights makes it a compelling model for governance. The strength of a democracy lies in its ability to adapt and respond to the needs and aspirations of its people. In the words of the late Nigerian novelist and Poet Chinua Achebe “A functioning and robust democracy requires a healthy, educated, participatory followership, and an educated, morally grounded leadership”. As we celebrate democracy day as a nation, may the actual democracy we all desire become a reality. Happy Democracy Day 🇳🇬 #Unity #Equality #Fairness #HappyDemocracyDay

Freedom is Not Inherited, It Is Earned One Generation at a Time. Freedom is often seen as a natural state, something we are simply born into. However, true freedom is neither automatic nor inherited; it is a precious privilege earned through the perseverance, sacrifice, and courage of each generation. The history of human rights and freedoms is a testament to this enduring truth. Every generation that has enjoyed greater liberty has done so as a result of the relentless efforts and struggles of those who came before. From the abolition of slavery to the fight for civil rights, the path to freedom is marked by battles fought, injustices confronted, and barriers broken. Each generation has its role to play in this ongoing quest. The efforts to secure and protect freedoms involve more than just legal changes; they require a deep and continuous commitment to justice, equality, and understanding. It’s through civic engagement, education, and advocacy that societies make meaningful progress toward a freer and more just world. The work to uphold freedom is never complete. New challenges and threats to liberty emerge, demanding fresh resolve and action. The legacy of freedom is built not just on past victories but on the dedication of each generation to safeguarding and expanding those rights. In essence, freedom is not a birthright but a responsibility. It is earned through the collective action and vigilance of each era, ensuring that the torch of liberty is passed on stronger and brighter for the next generation. #Freedom #HumanRights #GenerationalStruggle #Liberty #SocialJustice #CivicEngagement #Equality #HistoricalLegacy #RightsAndResponsibilities #JusticeForAll
