Happy #Juneteenth! Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery and marks a crucial moment in the ongoing struggle for civil rights and equality. On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation had been issued. Juneteenth also highlights the fundamental connection between emancipation and labor rights. While slavery legally ended, many newly freed individuals faced economic exploitation and continued to struggle for fair wages and decent working conditions. The labor movement has historically fought for these rights, aligning with the broader quest for economic justice and equality. Today's significance lies not only in its historical context as the end of slavery but also in its relevance to the continuing fight for equality, labor rights, and social justice.

"Although the Roman Empire described itself as being in favor of life and peace, the various Caesars and their enablers regularly dealt death and destruction in their wake...Fast forward millennia and that world bears a strange resemblance to the media distractions, #violence, and regressive policies that #MAGA and other #extremists are pushing forward in our times. Whether it’s Donald #Trump’s assertion that “I alone can fix your problems”; #SupremeCourt and state legislative attacks on #reproductiverights, #samesexmarriage, and #transyouth in the name of family values; cuts to #welfare, #healthcare, #workersrights and other life-sustaining programs to protect corporate interests; the militarizing of endless communities by allowing #guns (especially #AR15 rifles) to proliferate, while offering only thoughts and prayers to the victims of violence, the MAGA movement is promoting #culturewars and extremist policies under the banner of #Christiannationalism." #HeritageFoundation #Project2025 https://lnkd.in/eTQXyKfA

On this Juneteenth, let us reflect on the essence of this historic day and the unfinished battle for racial justice in our country. Juneteenth celebrates the day in 1865 when Union forces arrived in Galveston, Texas and proclaimed that all enslaved people were officially free. This occurred over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. Although Juneteenth is a commemoration of independence and liberty, it also serves as an awareness of the prolonged and devastating history of slavery and systemic racism in the United States. Let us honor the courage and fortitude of everyone who fought for freedom and justice and let us commit ourselves to establishing a more inclusive, equitable, and just future for all.
