Having played the Dizi for over 20 years, musician Joyce Poh has cumulated a wealth of experience in mastering her musical craft, which extends beyond the stage to performances in hospitals, polyclinics and community care centres. Joyce is also part of TENG Gives Back since its inception in 2018. Alongside the dedication of nurses and volunteers who spend their time engaging seniors in various activities, she found that music has the power to help senior beneficiaries feel seen, appreciated, and cared for during a vulnerable stage in their lives. Reflecting on her work with TENG Gives Back, Joyce shared that performers need to be compassionate even when someone does not enjoy, or interrupts their performances, while remaining sensitive to the emotional needs of the audience. Many patients and residents deal with frustration, illness, or depression – and music offers an outlet for them to express their emotions through laughter, tears, or excitement. Personal Note - I write this article in 2015. I have reviewed it to see if my goals and objectives are the same nearly a decade later. For the NDIA to release a statement that Art and Music Therapy are not ‘evidence-based’ is appalling. Both professions require a masters level of education. The master of art therapy is actually a Masters of Mental Health from UQ (in Queensland’s case) with 800+ hours placement and a complete focus on evidence-based interventions and neuroscience. To demoralise and denigrate an entire workforce is grounds for defamation and has effectively decimated their industries in one afternoon, with absolutely no consultation with peak bodies. The denial and erasure of experiential therapies feels rooted in bureaucracy and elitism. Our refusal to be progressive in terms of mental health is why even more so, Australians’ mental health is declining. The benefits that music and art therapy have brought to non-verbal communities and those that have trauma and other complexities is EXTREMELY well documented and well researched. As a leader in the NDIS field, a counsellor myself (Master of Counselling, Uni of Canberra) and an experienced disenfranchised children’s practitioner and mental health practitioner who has worked the last three years in experiential therapies - I am outraged at the blatant disrespect. I understand there has been considerable issues with the NDIS but when are we going to talk about the 85% of service providers that are shutting their businesses because it is too difficult to operate in an unstable funding climate? We are real therapists and practitioners, and if we were not then why would the universities such as UQ and Uni of Melbourne offer such qualifications? I implore my friends in psychology, social work and occupational therapy to stand beside us and speak up about the benefits you have witnessed.
What an appalling state of affairs we find ourselves in this week. And what an astonishing absence of leadership from the NDIA. With no consultation, art therapy and music therapy have been removed from the Capacity Building — Improved Daily Living category. Unbelievably it’s taken until this afternoon for the NDIA to provide the Australian Music Therapy Association and ANZACATA with written confirmation. We expect allied health to be the backbone of the NDIS yet the whole business model can be demolished in an afternoon. Allied Health Professions Australia #allliedhealth

All art therapists are highly trained and many have qualifications and or practical expertise in visual arts and counselling. Many have undertaken Masters degrees. The industry requires Continuing Professional Development and Accreditation and therefore should command industry professional rates of pay, commensurate with the responsibilities of the role.
Excellent progress ensuring a review of evidence will be conducted prior to any funding changes for music and art therapy in the NDIS. Thank you for all the excellent advocacy ANZACATA, Australian Music Therapy Association & Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (PACFA). 🎉

Imagine for a second, a world without Art, or Music. Imagine a world without Comedy or Drama. Doesn't seem possible does it. Now for a second image a world of Artists, Musicians, Comedians, Actors and Performers that can't face their world, crushed by the harshness of their own inner critic. Now that doesn't seem so impossible, does it? That is because we see that happening more and more often. So APA's Community Learning Platform will be adding a New package of Mental Health Support to the platform this summer. APA for the Entertainers is a dedicated package of support for Performers, Artists, Actors, Musicians, Sportspeople and others. NDIS funding changes for Music Therapy might affect access and treatment options for many. These changes could reduce program availability, impacting community wellbeing. It's important for educators, practitioners, and policymakers to engage in discussions about resource allocation. Working together, we can ensure this essential therapy continues to benefit countless individuals. 🎶👐 https://bit.ly/4eSNED8 #NDIS #MusicTherapy #CommunityWellbeing #AccessibilityForAll #PremiumHomeCareService

At Musical Moments, we’ve seen first-hand how music can transform the lives of elderly and vulnerable adults in care homes. For many, music becomes a beautiful bridge to memories they thought were lost. A favourite song from childhood can spark a smile, a familiar melody can open up conversations, and even the rhythm of a tune can inspire movement where words may not. Music has a special way of reaching emotions and memories, helping residents feel more connected—to themselves and to those around them. Whether it’s soothing anxiety or easing feelings of isolation, music brings comfort and joy in ways that are deeply human and meaningful. We truly believe that every melody has the power to heal, uplift, and create a sense of belonging, making music not just a form of entertainment, but a vital part of life in care homes. Fun Fact Friday, in 2020 I discovered Billie Eilish & NPR Tiny Desk Concerts (at home). Warning altered lyrics here. Here’s a link to the original*. https://lnkd.in/eimpJxi5 These are my revised/altered lyrics. “I had a dream I got everything I wanted You had a dream You got everything you wanted Don’t wanna lie here But you can learn to... Don’t wanna lie here But you can learn to... If I could change the way you see yourself You wouldn’t wonder Why they don’t deserve you. We have a dream. We’ll get everything you wanted…" When I have more time. I will make a video timed to the instrumental version. https://lnkd.in/e5fnfYFx *I don’t own the copyright to this song. ----------------------------------------------------------- I empower faculty women to get promoted, land new opportunities, & navigate transitions without sacrificing your personal relationships, your health, or your wealth. #faculty #personaldevelopment #KATwellnessKoaching #empower

I have yet to meet someone who says they don't like Dolly, and many say, "I don't like Beyonce." "Beyonce should stay in her lane." "There are other b1ack artists in country music. What is she trying to prove?" What did people say when Dolly made a rock & roll album? 🦗 ......... 🦗 Nothing. They supported her. Maybe even chuckled, as that is "such a Dolly move." (In another "Dolly move," she contributed to Beyonce's album with an intro to Beyonce's version of "Jolene," - highlighting how they both have issues "with h*ssies with the good hair.") Here are reasons to support Beyonce making a country album: She's from the south. She historically includes her southern roots in her music. She is a musical genius who mixes genres with ease. She h..... ( ❌ Scratch that. Here's the real reason...) 👏 Because she da** well wants to. 👏 Is Dolly's support an example of an active ally? What is an example of an active ally in your life? ----- Want to learn what it takes to move from an ally to an active ally? Message me "ALLY" to bring the topic to your company. #beyonce #dei #psychologicalsafety #emotionalintelligence
