"It's better to be different than it is to be better." AG Ford, a children's book illustrator and a good friend, joined me this week on Self-Funded with Spencer, and he shared with me some fundamental truths about art, including that skill isn't the most important factor in good art. This obviously doesn't apply in every industry, but the core lesson still stands true for a lot of people in this business: the things that set you apart are what make people want to work with you. Check out the full conversation on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, YouTube, and wherever you listen to your podcasts. #ArtisticStyle #EmbracingFlaws #BusinessArt #ArtisticJourney #CommercialArt #Illustrations #MarketDiversification #SelectiveProjects #WorkLifeBalance #BookPromotion #CreativeBalance #FamilyAndCareer #selffunded #podcast

Here’s a common question I get from fellow creative entrepreneurs: "Do you include any boundary-setting language in your contracts?" My take? Not really—but we make sure to set those boundaries from the very first conversation. We’re clear that while we’ll try to accommodate client needs within reason, we also have personal lives and set business hours. How do you all approach setting boundaries with your clients? Do you put it in writing, or is a conversation enough? #podcast #designdash #workboundaries

Ah, Mel Robbins - you had me at "NOTEBOOKS." I just listened to episode 209 of the Mel Robbins Podcast. It was exactly the thing I needed to hear today. It reminded me that almost every time I've changed jobs, started looking for a new place to live, or even bought a new car, it's been in the fall. She talks about how September is the perfect time for making big changes, to committing to new goals, and getting productive.I couldn't agree more. * September is when everything changes. The leaves, the weather, our routines, the TV schedule... :) All of these cues can help your brain be prepped and ready to start something new. * We are hard wired for 'Back to School' mode. We grew up every year with it and it still surrounds us. Crayons and notebooks on sale at the grocery store, new traffic patterns as the school bus once again blocks my route, etc. * If you start a goal in September for 2024 you only have a few months to accomplish it before the end of year. Take adavantage of Parkinson's law which says that work expands to fill the time available. Give yourself a deadline! What about you? Did you get yourself a new notebook (or 5)? Does fall inspire you to start new things? We'd love to hear your ideas! #theMelRobbinsPodcast #InclusiveAgile #BackToSchool

The Path to Striking Gold In the world of business, discomfort is a sign that you’re on the right track. The more uncomfortable you feel, the closer you are to striking gold. Lately, I’ve been pushing my boundaries: updating copy, about to drop another book, and launched a new video podcast show. The discomfort has been over the top and sometimes I’ve wanted to escape to the movies or head to the beach. But here’s what I’ve discovered: the closer I get to honing in on my purpose and completing projects, the more uncomfortable I become. When you lean into discomfort, you unearth unexpected nuggets of gold. It’s in those moments of overwhelm, when distractions seems tempting, that breakthroughs occur. Every day, I remind myself that discomfort is part of the journey. Today and every day, I embrace the discomfort knowing it’s the path to striking gold. Joie G 113

If you’re trying to solve a business problem, large or small- information can be your worst enemy. Why? Because how often have you started exploring content (podcasts, YouTube, articles) and found yourself going down a rabbit hole…? You end up with a myriad of solutions which = decision paralysis, Or, the “solution” is predicated on solving another problem, first. What is my ‘solution’ to this? Come to a call with other entrepreneurs. You can ask a question, or series of questions, which forces you to articulate the problem you’re trying to solve. We can then bring collective brainpower to bear on this problem, and get you unstuck. No more scrolling. No more videos. You get the answer and you move on. The next call is Thurs 6pm (UK) 1pm EST or check this link! https://lnkd.in/eEkWW6dz If you can’t make it, drop me a DM and I’ll see if I can chat to you 1:1 instead.

Alongside my love for podcasts, I also read a lot of books. I read Profit First by @mikemichalowicz at the end of 2022 and immediately put this strategy to work in our business. Profit First shows that by "taking profit first and apportioning only what remains for expenses, entrepreneurs can transform their businesses from cash-eating monsters to profitable cash cows." ❌ Before: Sales - Expenses = Profit ✅ After: Sales - Profit = Expenses Small mindset change with big impact! Let us know in the comments if you’ve read it or plan to pick one up for yourself.

Creativity Pro-Tip: Give yourself a creative prompt, along the lines of an advertising brief, with specific constraints. It’s hard to stare at a blank page or a blank canvas, where the possibilities are endless, so give yourself some parameters to work from, a “box” to start within and work your way out from. If you want some examples, you can find many prompts in our book, Syncreate: A Guide to Navigating the Creative Process for Individuals, Teams, and Communities. Syncreate Podcast Episode 30: Ben Thoma and Brian Thompson are the Co-Founders of CreativeMornings/Austin, a chapter of the worldwide organization CreativeMornings which hosts monthly creative gatherings in cities around the world. The mantra of Creative Mornings Austin is “Everyone is creative, and everyone is welcome.” Our conversation explores the nature of creativity, the importance of creative community, the notion of “genius,” and tips for sparking your own creativity. 🌟 Get clear on these 3 things first... ⭐ If you want to keep earning AND have the flexibility you need to attend appointments, run to school at the last minute, manage sick days and everything else that goes with having a child with additional needs, and you think running your own business will be a good way to do that.... then you want to listen to the new episode of the Braving the Wild: SEND Help podcast. Traditional business advice, fails carers for a few reasons: - It assumes we all have 'the same' 24-hours in a day - We don't! - It assumes that every business has massive growth ambitions - They don't! - It assumes that business advice is a one-size-fits-all job - It's not! When I work with clients, there are always 3 things I get clear on first because without those 3 things, they're building a business on pretty shoddy foundations. As a parent carer, your business has to fit around your life, not the other way around. Tune in to this weeks episode to hear the 3 foundations you have to think about before you even think about moving forward. It'll save time, money and a whole lot of angst! https://lnkd.in/gZCMcgjH
