Supporting farmers in adopting conservation practices often requires innovative funding. Adam Kiel of the Soil and Water Outcomes Fund explains how financial assistance from USDA, EPA, and state agencies helps incentivize water quality improvements, while new creative approaches aim to bridge funding gaps and meet farmers' economic needs. The bipartisan Fix Our Forests Act (H.R. 471), introduced by Rep. Scott Peters (D-CA) and House Natural Resources Committee Chairman, Bruce Westerman (R-AR), establishes requirements for managing forests on federal land. Healthy forests are essential to supporting clean water and sustainable fish and wildlife populations. However, decades of wildfire suppression coupled with a passive, often hands off approach to management has created dense, overgrown forests that impair habitat function, compromise water availability and quality, and elevate the risk of uncharacteristically catastrophic wildfire. ASA joined a coalition of outdoor recreation and industry partners in support of the Fix Our Forests Act. It passed the House of Representatives last week by an overwhelming 279-141 margin. Check out this overview of one of the Nature Based Solutions projects the Delta Conservancy is funding! In May 2023, the Delta Conservancy Board approved an award to Metropolitan Water District of Southern California for the Wetland Mosaic Landscape on Webb Tract Project in Contra Costa County. 🌾 In the video, Delta Conservancy Executive Officer Campbell Ingram describes the goal of our NBS program — to target the 150,000 acres of highly organic peat soils in the Delta that continue to subside, creating huge carbon emissions and flood risk. 🌊 He notes that the work on Webb Tract will be a great demonstration of how we can put an entire 5,000-acre island into a mosaic of managed wetland and rice to stop subsidence, ⬇ carbon emissions, but also generate enough 💰 through agriculture and the carbon market to maintain the levees and keep the island viable into the future.
