2023 was an incredible year of discovery, innovation and invention for the ARC Centre of Excellence for Enabling Eco-Efficient Beneficiation of Minerals (COEMinerals), as captured in our 2023 Annual Report. https://lnkd.in/ghKUYF9f Our extraordinary team of researchers are: * Unearthing new scientific knowledge, sharing world-first understandings and applying science-based solutions to improve mineral processing * Increasing the influence and impact of Australian science, and #COEMinerals, as an agent of change, is improving the efficiency of mineral processing and recovery of minerals * Collaborating closely across nine Australian universities and with partners, industry, international institutions and other contributors * Moving several new and game-changing technologies along the Technology Readiness Level (TRL) scale, from prototype to full scale trials * Delivering and enabling exceptional education, research, training, on-site, outreach and mentoring experiences for the future leaders of the mineral sector * Evolving our approach into three Research Themes, combining multiple science disciplines for maximum discovery, impact and innovation, and which directly aligning to achievement of Centre Objectives We acknowledge and thank Centre members, partners, Advisory Board and International Panel members along with academic and industry collaborators among many others for their contributions to our Centre, research and the development of new, more efficient and effective, and less-wasteful mineral processing (#beneficiation) methods for Australia and the world. In my key note talks, I have spoken extensively about the lesser-known threat of deep sea mining for critical minerals as a topic of interest for climate-related progressions and what the mineral-intensive future of 'decarbonization' looks like as supply chains scramble for new sources of materials for energy. 🔍 A few days ago, and in a month where deep sea is at high risk of exploitation of mining, a groundbreaking study was published in Nature Geoscience that reveals that oxygen is being produced in the deep sea through a process associated with polymetallic nodules on the seafloor of the Pacific Ocean within the Clarion-Clipperton Zone. More ominously, in the complete absence of sunlight. Round up: ▶ What does this mean? The implications of this discovery are profound, suggesting that oxygen could have been produced in the deep sea long before the advent of photosynthetic organisms. ▶ Why is this important? this challenges our understanding that photosynthesis is the primary process by which oxygen is produced to supporting life on earth. ▶ How? scientists believe that these "sea potatoes", that are mineral-rich concretions on the ocean floor are creating oxygen through the natural electrolysis of seawater by splitting H2O into hydrogen & oxygen atoms ▶ How many nodules are there out there? An estimated >21.1 billion tons of nodules are clustered within the Clarion-Clipperton Zone alone, powering what we are seeing as 'geobatteries'. ▶What is the risk? Certain groups have invested in researching the use of polymetallic nodules (which have taken millions of years to form) for commercial uses to replace land-based critical minerals. Scientists are concerned deep-sea mining would cause irreparable damage to already fragile ecosystems and biodiversity in addition to challenging the ocean's ability to sequester carbon.
