The Science Of (true) Visibility: Why It Matters. The desire to be seen, heard, and valued is universal. Brands, companies, institutions, politicians, individuals, scientists – we all share this need. Yet, the science of true visibility is not taught in schools, is barely discussed in universities, and is often absent from academia and research. And it should be. Future leaders and visionary scientific minds (and, frankly, anyone) need the tools to step up, own their voices, and courageously show up—not to be perfect, but #real. Because (I believe) true visibility isn’t about being the loudest or showing off. -It's about knowing your worth - your strengths, limitations, and potential. -It's about knowing your audience and being understood. -It's about building meaningful connections and asking for support when needed. -It's about creating the opportunities you desire and showing up with purpose. A huge shout-out to the EPFL PostDoc group (below) for being such a fantastic and fearless force in your quest for visibility and impact! It was truly a rewarding and unforgettable teaching experience! A big thank you to EPDA (EPFL Postdoc Association) for the chance to share knowledge and insights. Completing a doctoral dissertation is a monumental achievement, but for many, it often becomes just another requirement checked off the academic to-do list. Yet, as I reflect on my journey and the countless researchers I've worked with, I’m convinced: your dissertation can—and should—be more than that. It’s a business card for your expertise, a showcase of your thought leadership, and a tangible representation of your contribution to solving some of the world’s biggest challenges. Why not amplify your breakthrough research impact by making it accessible, visually engaging, and a reflection of your professional brand? From my own experience in research and supporting academics to become thought leaders, I see immense value in presenting our work with clarity and intention. This does help to make it more accessible to industry, policymakers, and collaborators. What steps are you taking to ensure your work reaches beyond academic walls? #science #research #scientist #chemicalengineering #PhD #professor #education

In today's rapidly evolving world, the value of a PhD extends far beyond deep specialization in a single area. It's about cultivating critical thinking, problem-solving, and adaptability. As a researcher and mentor, I've realized that our goal should not only be to produce experts in a narrow field but to nurture versatile thinkers who can tackle complex, multidisciplinary challenges. A PhD journey should be an exploration of ideas, encouraging curiosity, and fostering an environment where questioning the status quo is as important as mastering the details of one's specific research area. This broader perspective equips researchers to innovate and contribute meaningfully in diverse contexts. By emphasizing critical thinking and adaptability, we prepare the next generation of scholars to make significant impacts across various fields, driving progress and innovation in ways we can't even imagine today. Let's focus on training PhD candidates to be thinkers, not just specialists. #PhD #Research #CriticalThinking #Innovation #HigherEducation #Mentorship #research #highlight

Earning a PhD is an extraordinary milestone, but as my PhD advisor once shared, "Earning a PhD is not the real-life issue; maintaining a PhD is the real-life issue." This powerful insight speaks volumes about the journey that begins, rather than ends, with the conferral of a doctoral degree. A PhD signifies entrance into an exclusive community dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge, societal impact, and transformative innovation. It carries the weight of high expectations—not merely to advance specialized research, but to apply our expertise and make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Our society looks to PhD holders not just as scholars, but as changemakers, leaders, and stewards of progress. "Maintaining" a PhD means continuously embodying the values of intellectual rigor, ethical responsibility, and the capacity to inspire positive change. It is about translating complex research into accessible solutions, mentoring the next generation, and fostering collaboration that transcends disciplines and borders. It is a call to create impact far beyond the academic sphere. To my fellow PhD holders and aspirants, let us reflect on this responsibility. We are not defined solely by our titles but by how we leverage our knowledge and values for the greater good. May we continue to learn, adapt, and serve, ensuring our legacy is one of contribution and empowerment. #PhDLeadership #SocietalImpact #LifelongCommitment #TransformativeChange #KnowledgeWithPurpose
