Agreeing with Highlights For Children's CEO on the importance of quality childcare (I added "quality" because not all childcare is created equal) and early learning. But that's not enough to make the change he speaks of. Studies have shown for decades that the gains for children enrolled in preschool programs such as Head Start largely disappear by age 8. That is NOT an argument for doing away with those programs -- they confer benefits beyond school readiness skills. The problem is that education has become a competitive sport. Quality childcare and early learning do not change that. Mr. Johnson's argument -- that quality childcare and early learning somehow create an even playing field on which no child is left behind (where have we heard THAT before?) -- goes all the way back to Thomas Jefferson, who declared public education "the Great Equalizer." But there is no magical world in which all children have the same privileges or the same resources. Even if there were, the nature of the game that is 21st century education is competition -- it's a feature, not a bug. And it's not only children from disadvantaged backgrounds who feel the pressure -- even Ivy-bound students whose parents sent them to the best preschools in the country worry that they won't be able to keep up. It isn't a dearth of quality childcare and early learning that is causing increasing numbers of students in countries such as Japan and India to commit suicide when they miss the academic mark. If you want children to stop worrying about being able to keep up with their classmates, you have to do more than provide quality childcare and early learning. You have to address the education system that they will spend 15-20 years of their lives in. You have to somehow get rid of the terrible meritocratic, performative, corporate model it is based on. This model not only treats education as a commodity, it treats students themselves as commodities. I don't think I am exaggerating when I say that this mindset is obscene. So let's start by valuing children for simply being the young humans that they are, rather than teaching them that their worth is tied to their performance on tests in school. Let's provide them with early education not because it will get them into a good college and then a good job (a premise that Generations X, Y, and Z would take issue with), but because children are young humans and education is a human right. And along the way, subscribe them to Highlights. It's still an awesome magazine. #earlychildhoodeducation #alternativeeducation #highlightsforchildren #earlylearning
"Instead of looking forward to the first day of school, millions across the U.S. worry they won’t be able to keep up with their classmates. But child care and early learning can change that." Highlights is a proud supporter of Save the Children US's Make Summer Fair campaign. This important program provides resources to kids over the summer. You can support their work by emailing Congress in support of early childhood education. This is more than a child issue - it is a workforce issue, an economic issue, and a moral issue. https://lnkd.in/gSpWwGxq

Inclusion and peer mediated supports are key to access and true belonging within the community. “Numerous studies show non-disabled students can benefit from sharing the classroom with those who have learning differences. Jennifer Kurth of the University of Kansas says non-disabled students either show improved academic and social outcomes or their outcomes remain the same.” I’m happy to chat about strategies for setting up systems to help make PMII a reality so that ALL students can benefit. #Inclusion #Neurodiversity #Belonging #SpecialNeeds #Access #Autism

"You can't squeeze blood from a turnip" My dad's legacy lives within the remnants of life lessons taught through phrases like this. When I did a google search on what this phrase really means - it means that you cannot get money from someone who doesn't have it. I always thought it was more than this... I would argue that you can't get quality work from someone who is burnt out. You can't ask someone to do a job without support that they don't have the skill for yet. You can't expect perfection with sub-quality materials. Can you come up with others? Students in transition to higher education spaces may be trying to "squeeze blood from a turnip" if... -they don't have college educated parents to guide them through the hidden curriculum - they have a disability that makes different learning tasks difficult -they didn't learn good study skills in high school Getting supports to equal the playing field is something that we, as educators, can advocate for - summer bridge programs, specialized supports for students with different needs, destigmatizing supports and request for accommodations, and making sure that these offices are fully staffed and appropriately trained so that when I student has a need they can get that need met. #OccupationalTherapy #StudentSuccess #TheCollegeOT

💡 New Orleans is taking a bold step forward in special education. By exploring the creation of a shared hub for schools across the city, the initiative could revolutionize how special education services are provided and ensure every child receives the support they need to succeed. By pooling resources and expertise, this hub could offer specialized programs, therapies, and training that individual schools may not have the capacity to provide on their own. It’s a powerful example of collaboration with the potential to create more equitable and inclusive learning environments for students with disabilities. 🧩 What are your thoughts on shared special education services? Drop your thoughts in the comments below! 💬
