"Somewhere I found that slowly the idea of studying to learn changed to studying to get marks," said Damayanti Bhattacharya on Thinkly Talks. She is an AP and IGCSE certified teacher for Global Perspectives, currently the principal of JML School, with over 30 years of experience shaping the education landscape. She joins Higher Education Consultant Vijay Sonawane - Higher Education Consultant to explore the current state of India's education system. Here are the top 5 takeaways from their conversation: 🏫 India’s education system isn’t broken, but outdated: While the system has functioned for decades, its delivery method needs a revamp. Young educators with fresh ideas should be involved in designing curricula. 💡 Vocational training needs to be normalized: Vocational education is undervalued. Removing the stigma around non-academic careers and establishing quality regional colleges for practical skills training is crucial. 🎯 Memorization vs. Metacognition: Education focuses too much on memorization for exams. The real gap is in metacognition—teaching students how to think and learn, a crucial skill missing in today's system. 🌍 India's research and innovation lag: The higher education system lacks focus on research, particularly in basic sciences. More funding and resources are needed to foster world-class innovations. 🌱 Adaptability in a VUCA world: In a volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) world, students must be taught flexibility and adaptability—skills that the traditional education system often overlooks. They also discussed: ⏩ Impact of social media on student focus and motivation ⏩ How outdated teacher training impacts classroom innovation ⏩ The role of mental health support in boosting student performance ⏩ Why curriculum flexibility can unlock hidden student talents https://lnkd.in/dau6nsz4 (education system reform, critical thinking in students, marks vs learning, modern education challenges, vocational training in India, outdated education methods, politicizing education, higher education research, flexible curriculum, student mental health support, teacher training reform, metacognition in education, future of Indian education, adaptability in students, VUCA world education) #thinkly #thinklytalks #ama #podcast #livestreaming #experts #community #educationreform #modernlearning #futureofeducation #studentwellbeing #vocationaleducation #teachertips #learningmindset #highereducationinnovation #curriculumchange #21stcenturyskills #emotionalintelligence #adaptablelearning #youthleadership

Dr Hrushikesh Senapaty is a renowned academician and former Director of National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). It was during his tenure the Learning Outcomes for Elementary and Secondary education were drafted and released for implementation by schools. In the first episode of Pallikkutam Dialogues, he talks about the context and the challenges involved in implementing of learning outcomes. He says pedagogy, curriculum, evaluation and assessment has to be adequately changed to see good results in learning outcomes in children. The content load has to be reduced, teachers have to take a process-oriented approach. The content should be used to impart critical thinking, cognitive skills to children. He says AI cannot develop the affective domain in students. He says the constructivist theory is focussed on developing the intrinsic motivation in students. Content mastery alone should not be the goal of education. An indigenous pedagogy inspired from the Buddhist method of teaching followed in ancient universities such as Nalanda, Takshashila and Vikramshila are still relevant in the AI age. Only such an approach can lead to holistic development of the child. #educationphilosophy #learningoutcome

Strengths: • Strong Theoretical Foundation: Provides a robust understanding of subjects like mathematics, science, and languages. • Diverse Subject Choices: Offers a wide range of subjects including humanities, sciences, commerce, and vocational training. • Emphasis on Examination Preparation: Prepares students thoroughly for competitive exams through rigorous academic training. Analysis of India's Educational Curricula Strengths: 1. Theoretical Knowledge: Indian curricula, especially CBSE and ICSE, provide a strong foundation in core subjects, ensuring students have in-depth theoretical knowledge. 2. Subject Diversity: Students have access to a broad spectrum of subjects, allowing them to tailor their education to their interests and career aspirations. 3. Use of Technology: Increasing integration of digital tools and online resources enhances accessibility to quality education. 4. Standardized Assessments: Uniform board exams offer a consistent measure of student performance nationwide. Challenges : 1. Rote Learning: Over-reliance on memorization rather than fostering critical thinking and practical application skills. 2. Practical Exposure: Limited opportunities for hands-on learning and practical experiences, particularly in science and technical subjects. 3. Teacher Training: Insufficient training for teachers to adopt modern teaching methods and address diverse learning needs. 4. Educational Inequality: Significant disparities between urban and rural schools in terms of infrastructure and access to resources. 5. Outdated Content: Curriculum content often lags behind current global trends and technological advancements. 6. High-Stress Exams: The intense focus on high-stakes exams creates significant stress and anxiety among students. Recommendations for Improvement: 1. Promote Critical Thinking and Creativity: Shift from rote learning to methods that encourage problem-solving, critical thinking, and creativity. 2. Increase Practical Learning: Integrate more hands-on activities and practical applications in subjects, especially STEM fields. 3. Regular Curriculum Updates: Continuously update curricula to incorporate new developments and technologies. 4. Enhance Teacher Training: Provide ongoing professional development to equip teachers with contemporary pedagogical skills. 5. Reduce Educational Disparities: Implement measures to bridge the gap between urban and rural education quality and resources. 6. Reform Assessment Methods: Modify the examination system to reduce stress and include evaluation of practical and soft skills. By addressing these challenges and leveraging its strengths, India can develop an educational system that not only meets global standards but also prepares students for future challenges #goldenbellspreschools #goldenbellsearlyyears #goldenbellspreschoolashokvihar #multipleintelligence

Working on inquiry-based learning has been transformative, especially as I witness its impact on student engagement and growth. In India, where adults are often accustomed to instruction over inquiry, the challenge is deeper. Rewiring ourselves to pause, allow for questions, and nurture student agency requires intention and effort. Although it might claim international school or an IB school however how much authentic inquiry is taking place?? Thats the challenge and who is leading the inquiry- This shift led me to explore Trevor MacKenzie work, which offers a practical, application-based approach to inquiry like nothing I’ve encountered before. Trevor, I’m thrilled to have found your insights in this journey—it’s been simply exciting ! It resonates with the approach I cater to in my book #TheWrongABCsofPreschool Trevor MacKenzie thanks trevor for this grounded impactful work you do! In my programs, I model and demonstrate how questioning, authentic dialogues, and real child interactions unfold in a classroom. Collecting evidence of these shifts has shown me that all it takes is patience, persistence, and a willingness to pause—letting students lead their learning. Are we ready to embrace this change?" #InquiryBasedLearning #StudentAgency #IndianEducation #TransformingClassrooms #EducationInnovation #ShrutiNagarDave

Assessment in Higher Education for Better Success Assessment in higher education evaluates student learning and development. It determines the effectiveness of academic programs and teaching methods. Constructing a solid framework for assessment in higher education is critical. Educational institutions rely on various assessment methods to ensure students meet learning objectives and gain the necessary skills for their future careers. Professors and academic professionals design these assessments to align with the curriculum and often include examinations, portfolios, presentations, and peer reviews. A thoughtful approach to assessment drives improvements in teaching strategies and course design, as well as providing transparent benchmarks for student achievement. Effective assessment helps educators identify areas where students struggle and excel, creating opportunities for targeted feedback and personalized learning experiences. For students, it also offers a clear understanding of their academic progress and areas requiring additional effort or support. Today I read a blog by Greshma Momaya ma'am on Finnish pedagogy. With continuously advocating teachers on using NEP 2020 effectively it is so etched in my mind now that after reading this article I decided to draw some similarities between Finnish pedagogy and NEP 2020. My Insights: 1. Holistic Development: Both systems prioritize holistic development, nurturing critical thinking, creativity, and socio-emotional skills alongside academic knowledge. 2. Child-Centric Approach: Finnish pedagogy's emphasis on personalized learning mirrors NEP 2020's shift towards learner-centered education, fostering individualized learning pathways. 3. Less Emphasis on Exams: Aligning with Finland's approach, NEP 2020 advocates for reduced reliance on exams, emphasizing continuous assessment and feedback. 4. Empowering Educators: Both systems empower educators, promoting professional autonomy, continuous learning, and innovative teaching practices. 5. Inclusivity and Equity: Finland and NEP 2020 prioritize inclusivity, equity, and support for diverse learners, ensuring access to quality education for all. 6. Vocational Integration: NEP 2020's focus on vocational education integration resonates with Finland's diverse educational pathways catering to varied career aspirations. By drawing inspiration from successful models like the Finnish education system and aligning with the principles of NEP 2020, India can work towards creating a more inclusive, learner-centered, and holistic education system that prepares students for the challenges of the future. #EducationTransformation #NEP2020 #FinnishPedagogy #LearnerCentricEducation #InclusiveEducation #EmpoweringEducators

This approach, apart from honing their language skills, aims at: - 1. 💡 Debates as Learning Tools Our training sessions engage teachers in debates where they search for information from the web and articulate their findings. This approach not only hones their critical thinking and research skills but also enhances their language proficiency. 2.🕶Research Skills Teachers learn to navigate the internet efficiently, finding credible sources and gathering relevant information. This skill is indispensable in the digital age, enabling them to access a wealth of knowledge and resources. 3. 🗣️ Communication Skills Debating helps improve their ability to articulate thoughts clearly and confidently in a second language. This practice builds their confidence in both oral and written communication. 4. 🤝 Collaboration Through these debates, teachers collaborate with their peers, exchanging ideas and perspectives. This fosters a sense of community and shared learning. 5. 🎯 Critical Thinking Engaging in debates encourages teachers to think critically, analyze information, and form well-reasoned arguments. This skill is vital for both personal and professional growth. 6. 📈 Continuous Learning The program instills a mindset of continuous learning, empowering Madrasa teachers to stay updated and adapt to new educational trends and technologies.
