"Somewhere I found that slowly the idea of studying to learn changed to studying to get marks," said Damayanti Bhattacharya on Thinkly Talks. She is an AP and IGCSE certified teacher for Global Perspectives, currently the principal of JML School, with over 30 years of experience shaping the education landscape. She joins Higher Education Consultant Vijay Sonawane - Higher Education Consultant to explore the current state of India's education system. Here are the top 5 takeaways from their conversation: 🏫 India’s education system isn’t broken, but outdated: While the system has functioned for decades, its delivery method needs a revamp. Young educators with fresh ideas should be involved in designing curricula. 💡 Vocational training needs to be normalized: Vocational education is undervalued. Removing the stigma around non-academic careers and establishing quality regional colleges for practical skills training is crucial. 🎯 Memorization vs. Metacognition: Education focuses too much on memorization for exams. The real gap is in metacognition—teaching students how to think and learn, a crucial skill missing in today's system. 🌍 India's research and innovation lag: The higher education system lacks focus on research, particularly in basic sciences. More funding and resources are needed to foster world-class innovations. 🌱 Adaptability in a VUCA world: In a volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) world, students must be taught flexibility and adaptability—skills that the traditional education system often overlooks. They also discussed: ⏩ Impact of social media on student focus and motivation ⏩ How outdated teacher training impacts classroom innovation ⏩ The role of mental health support in boosting student performance ⏩ Why curriculum flexibility can unlock hidden student talents https://lnkd.in/dau6nsz4 (education system reform, critical thinking in students, marks vs learning, modern education challenges, vocational training in India, outdated education methods, politicizing education, higher education research, flexible curriculum, student mental health support, teacher training reform, metacognition in education, future of Indian education, adaptability in students, VUCA world education) #thinkly #thinklytalks #ama #podcast #livestreaming #experts #community #educationreform #modernlearning #futureofeducation #studentwellbeing #vocationaleducation #teachertips #learningmindset #highereducationinnovation #curriculumchange #21stcenturyskills #emotionalintelligence #adaptablelearning #youthleadership

Dr Hrushikesh Senapaty is a renowned academician and former Director of National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT). It was during his tenure the Learning Outcomes for Elementary and Secondary education were drafted and released for implementation by schools. In the first episode of Pallikkutam Dialogues, he talks about the context and the challenges involved in implementing of learning outcomes. He says pedagogy, curriculum, evaluation and assessment has to be adequately changed to see good results in learning outcomes in children. The content load has to be reduced, teachers have to take a process-oriented approach. The content should be used to impart critical thinking, cognitive skills to children. He says AI cannot develop the affective domain in students. He says the constructivist theory is focussed on developing the intrinsic motivation in students. Content mastery alone should not be the goal of education. An indigenous pedagogy inspired from the Buddhist method of teaching followed in ancient universities such as Nalanda, Takshashila and Vikramshila are still relevant in the AI age. Only such an approach can lead to holistic development of the child. #educationphilosophy #learningoutcome

Working on inquiry-based learning has been transformative, especially as I witness its impact on student engagement and growth. In India, where adults are often accustomed to instruction over inquiry, the challenge is deeper. Rewiring ourselves to pause, allow for questions, and nurture student agency requires intention and effort. Although it might claim international school or an IB school however how much authentic inquiry is taking place?? Thats the challenge and who is leading the inquiry- This shift led me to explore Trevor MacKenzie work, which offers a practical, application-based approach to inquiry like nothing I’ve encountered before. Trevor, I’m thrilled to have found your insights in this journey—it’s been simply exciting ! It resonates with the approach I cater to in my book #TheWrongABCsofPreschool Trevor MacKenzie thanks trevor for this grounded impactful work you do! In my programs, I model and demonstrate how questioning, authentic dialogues, and real child interactions unfold in a classroom. Collecting evidence of these shifts has shown me that all it takes is patience, persistence, and a willingness to pause—letting students lead their learning. Are we ready to embrace this change?" #InquiryBasedLearning #StudentAgency #IndianEducation #TransformingClassrooms #EducationInnovation #ShrutiNagarDave

Assessment in Higher Education for Better Success Assessment in higher education evaluates student learning and development. It determines the effectiveness of academic programs and teaching methods. Constructing a solid framework for assessment in higher education is critical. Educational institutions rely on various assessment methods to ensure students meet learning objectives and gain the necessary skills for their future careers. Professors and academic professionals design these assessments to align with the curriculum and often include examinations, portfolios, presentations, and peer reviews. A thoughtful approach to assessment drives improvements in teaching strategies and course design, as well as providing transparent benchmarks for student achievement. Effective assessment helps educators identify areas where students struggle and excel, creating opportunities for targeted feedback and personalized learning experiences. For students, it also offers a clear understanding of their academic progress and areas requiring additional effort or support. "As it happens with assessment, what can be measured becomes more important than measuring what's important." - Vardan Kabra, Reimagining Indian Education In a world driven by numbers and data, have we lost sight of what truly matters in education? This thought-provoking insight from Vardan Kabra's work invites us to question the foundations of our current assessment systems. Are we prioritizing quantifiable outcomes over invaluable learning experiences? How can we ensure that our educational assessments reflect the depth, creativity, and critical thinking skills that truly matter for the future? How we can reshape assessment practices to honour the essence of learning, not just the metrics?
