Our Republic – Did you ever wonder where the idea of separation of powers originated? Montesquieu, in his The Spirit of the Laws. Where does he get the concept, from Livy. Our Founding Fathers knew the works of Livy and Montesquieu; along with others, these historians studied the Roman Republic and its fall into an empire. Think about the three main forms of government, Republic, Monarchy, and Autocracy. The most fragile is the Republic; when it fails, it becomes a monarchy. We learn from Cato’s Letters; freedom of speech is our most treasured right. Once this right is gone, you’re in a lot of trouble. As you go through life and deal with the day-to-day hassles, are you trying to prepare for our upcoming elections by learning the truth? Do you believe as our Founding Fathers did, we need to study the Roman Republic or are you just getting an earful from news outlets? It isn’t that these outlets are lying to you, they have their own version of events. The adage, the road to heaven is paved with good intentions, is apropos, but if you don’t take the time to learn the context of what was said or done and you only listen to your favorite news outlet, you’re not going to be well informed. I suggest, at the very least, you listen to the opposing viewpoints and try to get another slant/opinion of “the facts.”
