Hi all. Apologies to those sick of the subject of one of our largest, mismanaged but economically important listed companies, but my latest column looks at Fletcher Building's newest director.

Roughly 9% of available construction businesses in New Jersey are Black-owned, yet less than 0.14% of available construction contract dollars are spent on Black-owned businesses. Latino-owned businesses face similar results, continually being underrepresented in awarded contracts. On New Jersey Business & Industry Association (NJBIA)'s “Think Tank”, Steve Adubato ON THE AIR discusses with NJ’s top business leaders the challenges minority-owned businesses face securing state contracts, and strategies that both state government and local businesses can take to bridge the gap. The panel includes Marjorie Perry, President and CEO of MZM Construction Co. It was great to join DDC Commissioner Thomas Foley, P.E., and DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez this morning at New York Building Congress panel and share all the ways we’re building a stronger, safer, more resilient future. Thank you Carlo Scissura for the opportunity to share the role and remit of the public realm team at City Hall. To recap, we are focused on doing 3 things: 1. Hardware - Advancing transformative public space projects to make sure they happen on time and on budget. From Fifth Avenue and Broadway Vision to Chinatown Connections and Queensway, we support capital agencies to get them decisions they need to keep projects moving. 2. Software - Creating vibrant public spaces is not just about building new. The real secret sauce is maintenance and programming which can transform the smallest unassuming spaces into something wonderful. Cities need partners to help us do that maintainance and activation work, but we don’t always make it easy for partners. How do we make it easier for partners to do this work in our public spaces? 3. Orgware - Many agencies have various jurisdictions over public spaces. How can city agencies better coordinate their policies, rules, regulations, and plans in a comprehensive way that is easier to understand for people to understand and navigate? We'd like to introduce you to Tamara Kilty, CCIFP. Tammy is a Past President of CFMA Chicago Chapter and the current Chair of the Build Chicago Awards Committee. Tammy also serves as the Vice Chair of CFMA's Chapter Resource Committee. Q: Tell us about your career path. A: My construction career began when I took a job as a project accountant at a general contractor. I was quickly captivated by the industry's fast-paced environment. After a few years, I transitioned into a luxury home builder, immersing myself in the client experience and witnessing the joy of people buying their dream homes. While there, I completed my accounting degree. Currently, I work for a masonry contractor. My journey here has seen me progress from controller to CFO, and I am on track to soon becoming president. Q: Why should other women consider a field in construction/finance? A: It is a dynamic and challenging field, perfect for women who thrive on problem-solving and seeing projects come to life. Construction has traditionally been a male–dominated field, but that’s changing! Women are shattering the glass ceiling and creating a more diverse and inclusive workplace. My best advice is to join CFMA. Be a sponge and soak up everything you can about the construction process, not just the financial aspects. The more you understand the bigger picture, the better equipped you’ll be to make sound financial decisions and navigate the complexities of the industry. Q: Why CFMA? A: CFMA provided opportunities to connect with other construction financial professionals. Through those connections, you get mentorship and collaboration with other like-minded people. The panel that I enjoyed the most at the summit. Talking about inclusion: how do we make the construction industry more desirable to women, to Gen Z (my goodness don't tell the younger generation about 10 paid leave days per annum), how to retain talent in your company. I also loved that we discussed mental health especially looking at men (male dominated industry). The statistics of men who succumb to suicide is wild. This needs to be addressed, even in the construction industry. Listen, a wholesome conversation. I hope we take these nuggets and actually implement. One speaker said: "Be the manager you wish you had." 😉 And that right there resonated. If you had a bad manager, there's absolutely no need to emulate that. No need. Change the narrative. Change the story. You can do it. National Construction Summit
