Steer-by-wire (SBW) technology has limited significance in automotive applications due to safety concerns, marginal impact on fuel efficiency, constrained design flexibility, and effectiveness dependency on factors beyond electronic steering control. While it offers minor enhancements in driving comfort, it remains a minor advancement overall. The subsystems of a typical steer-by-wire system include: 1. Steering Control Unit (SCU): The SCU is the central electronic control unit responsible for processing inputs from the driver (via the steering wheel) and other sensors, and sending commands to the actuator(s) to control the steering angle of the wheels. 2. Actuator: The actuator is the component that physically turns the wheels based on commands from the SCU. Depending on the specific implementation, this could be an electric motor, hydraulic actuator, or other types of actuators. 3. Feedback System: SBW systems often include sensors and feedback mechanisms to provide information about the position and movement of the wheels to the SCU. This feedback helps ensure accurate and precise control of the steering system. 4. Redundancy Systems: Given the critical nature of steering control in a vehicle, SBW systems typically incorporate redundancy features to ensure continued operation in the event of a failure. This may include redundant sensors, actuators, and control strategies. 5. Communication Interfaces: SBW systems may include communication interfaces to connect with other vehicle systems, such as the engine control unit, brake system, and ADAS components, to enable coordinated control and integration of various functions.
