The research offers the useful term 'alarm flooding,' which can confuse and lead to poor decision-making. "The calmest individual on earth would surely be at least showing signs of irritation, having to cope with 74 alarms per hour, while wretched engineering staff will sometimes have to cope with 2,500 alarms per day, suffering what has been termed 'alarm fatigue.' "It is reported that some have had to endure peaks of 22,500 alarms per day, which must make for exceedingly irritated watchkeepers. And it doesn’t help the cause of sanity, if all the salient engine room alarms sound, or flash, in panels on the bridge, with unmanned machinery space systems in operation." How Drone-based Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) Works 🚁📡 Drone-based GPR technology is transforming the way we explore what's beneath the surface. 🌍 Using radar pulses, GPR detects and images underground objects and features. 🔹 How does it work? A GPR transmitter emits electromagnetic energy into the ground. When the signal encounters a buried object or a boundary between materials with different dielectric properties (which affect how fast electromagnetic waves travel), part of that energy is reflected back to the surface. The GPR receiver then captures these reflected signals, allowing the system to map variations in the underground environment. Seeing underground enhances safety and reduces utility strikes for Explore Plant and Transport Solutions as it invests in Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) with Leica Geosystems part of Hexagon. I recently caught up with its GPR expert Shane Gwilt MCInstCES, as part of an Explore training day attended by Simon Budd of Explore at The Leica Geosystems School in Shropshire. Shane walked and talked me through one of its key products, the IDS Stream DP, which is a multichannel GPR array solution, explaining how it works. Shane: “The Stream DP is what we call a mass array penetrating radar system. It goes deep into the ground and has 30 different channels in double polarisation, 19VV + 11HH. "In practical terms, this means it can support the collection of underground asset data like pipes and cables, making it possible to create a 3D reconstruction of even the most complex mix of underground utility networks. “Thanks to its use of equalised scrambled technology to control the GPR signal the 3D models created are highly accurate for the size, depth and exact location. "So as Explore invests in our GPR solutions it can now use this type of data to create more accurate 3D earthworks models to dig to when using our 3D machine control fitted to this JCB. "With the machine also being fitted with the Xwatch Safety Solutions part of Hexagon 3D collision avoidance solution, the same model can be used to create avoidance zones, keeping the operator safe, whilst the machine stops it from getting too close to the GPR scanned utilities. “And because you need just one pass, it reduces the amount of survey time required, particularly for larger or linear projects. “Of course, scanning in this way is not just about finding what is underground before you dig, it can also be used to accurately measure utilities when you have put them into the ground. “Compiling accurate data can also help the wider sector alert people of utility locations in the future, particularly when the data is added to the National Underground Asset Register (NUAR).” For those interested in learning more about NUAR, look out for my exclusive interview at Highways UK with Holger Kessler of AtkinsRéalis, which will be coming out on our channels tomorrow. #GPR #3dcollisionavoidance #xwatchsafetysolutions #leicageosystems #digitalsolutions #safetyonsite #utilitystrikes
