Did you know Orangutans share 97% of their DNA with humans 🤝 And yet we don’t look at them the same way. 🇮🇩 Around 24 million hectares of rainforest were destroyed in Indonesia between 1990 and 2015, according to official figures from the Indonesian government. 🇬🇧 That’s an area the size of the UK. 🦧 Only 14,000 Sumatran orangutans and just 800 Tapanuli orangutans remain in the wild. I’m a big fan of organisations that work on the ground with the people who understand the land. 💪🏻 The Sumatran Orangutan Society is one of these. Their mission is to protect orangutans, their forests, and their future. And they work with local partners in orangutan landscapes towards their vision of wild orangutans thriving in resilient forests. They support the long-term conservation of these globally important rainforests through progressive, community-based conservation programmes, which address and overcome local pressures on orangutans by engaging forest-edge communities in grassroots conservation action. And their work works: 🌳 Supported regeneration of over 2,000 hectares of orangutan habitat through planting more than 2 million trees. 🧕🏽 Championed forest-edge communities and engaged more than 7,000 people in conservation action through their frontline partners. 👏🏻 Supported Yayasan Orangutan Sumatera Lestari (Orangutan Information Centre) to grow from a small, grassroots volunteer group into an internationally-recognised conservation organisation with over 100 staff. 🦧 Supported the establishment of the foremost orangutan rescue unit in Sumatra, saving over 200 orangutans so far. 👨🏼⚖️ Contributed to tackling the link between international trade and deforestation, including advocating for stronger regulations on sustainable palm oil, and successful calls for EU legislative reform. And now you can support them continue and expand their work. They’ve just launched their Rewild Fund 🌱 read more below! It's so painful to see how we treat these beautiful animals. A law change would go a long way to protecting them

I visited the Sumatra Orangota rehabilitation centre as a backpacker back in 1997 - I imagine that is what you here refer to as the rescue unit and perhaps the information center. amazing experience and absolutely amazing animals! thank you for the shout out about the fund Thomas Panton

Would be cool if they declare orangutans as national symbol and applied strict protection laws around them, Thomas.

Such a huge problem with illegal tree logging. I lived there back in 2012, with biodiversity suffering visibly, but also local communities in higher altitudes dependent on water being drained up from the trees felt the impact. We're so dependent on nature!
