Los Padres ForestWatch is seeking the public's support to permanently protect Tecuya Ridge's 68 acres of forest habitat in Los Padres National Forest, which is near the convergence of California's Los Angeles, Ventura, and Kern county lines. Tecuya Ridge is a place where endangered California condors soar overhead, where black bears and mountain lions and deer roam, and where breathtaking views stretch from the snow-capped Sierra Nevada to Mt. Pinos and the Sespe backcountry. It’s also a place called Tacuy^ that is culturally and spiritually important to Chumash and Yokuts people. By purchasing this land, we can immediately remove the risk posed by logging, mining, and other development. Our long-term plan is to hold the property in a conservation easement to ensure that it will never again come under threat of development. This living, thriving forest will be used for ecological study, education, traditional indigenous gathering and ceremony, and left to do what forests do best—provide wildlife habitat, regulate our climate, replenish the soil, and serve as an inspiration for us all. Our Tecuya Forever campaign seeks to raise $300,000 to cover the property’s appraised purchase price, closing costs, and completion of a long-term management plan and conservation easement for the land. NEWS UPDATE: Project Deveron achieves first ever returning adult salmon count for the River Deveron 🐟 Project Deveron, a partnership between the Deveron, Bogie & Isla Rivers Charitable Trust and the Atlantic Salmon Trust, will deliver catchment-scale habitat restoration with state-of-the-art salmon population and wider environmental monitoring – the aim being to demonstrate and measure the success of our efforts over time. A key aspect of this monitoring is accurately counting the numbers of returning adult salmon via the use of an ARIS (Adaptive Resolution Imaging Sonar) system located in the lower River Deveron. Following a great deal of hard work and collaboration by the teams involved, both out in the field and through desk-based data analysis, we can announce that the first ever accurately recorded returning adult salmon count for the River Deveron was achieved in 2023. This count recorded 4,674 upstream salmon with further data modelling work suggesting that the total estimated run was 5,600 adult salmon entering the Deveron recorded during the period of 24th February to 19th October 2023. A $21 million dollar donation to The Nature Conservancy - most likely the single largest donation to buy land in Australian history - has supported the Queensland Government in the purchase of the Vergemont Station in western Queensland. Making an important contribution to Australia’s efforts to protect 30% of lands and 30% of oceans by 2030 (Pathways to 30x30 report), this acquisition will create a conservation corridor of 1.4 million hectares (slightly larger than Yosemite National Park in the United States). The area contains 34 regional ecosystems, including key habitat for the endangered Night Parrot and highly restricted Opalton Grasswren, and protects the headwaters of the Lake Eyre Basin, the source of one of the last remaining free-flowing arid river systems in the world. The Cameron Peak Reforestation Group (CPRG) formed in response to the Cameron Peak Fire, the largest fire in Colorado history. It burned more than 200,000 acres in northern Colorado in 2020, and more than half of that area burned at high severity. The group works collaboratively to bring resources to help landowners recover and reforest following the Cameron Peak and High Park fires.   Since 2021, CPRG has worked together with hundreds of volunteers, business partners, and donors to plant more than 35,000 trees. We would not be able to do this work without the support of our local community. And of course, with so much interest in tree planting, we get a lot of questions about our reforestation efforts. Yesterday I was reading about development and damage to critical parts of National parks and important eco-systems. With what has been going on in the Amazon and around the globe, I found in my own "back yard", here in Australia The Daintree National Park, is being encroached on by property development. The Save The Daintree group are raising money to "land Bank" an important parcel of land that backs onto two important corridors of Daintree National Park. "Once purchased, properties are proposed for inclusion in the Daintree National Park, as this provides the highest available level of protection. In the last 4 years, we have purchased 32 properties in the Daintree Lowlands (between the Daintree River and Cape Tribulation). The acquisition of Lot 92 Cape Tribulation Road will help fulfil our vision for the conservation of the Daintree Lowland Rainforest. We’ve exchanged a contract of sale and paid a deposit. Now we must raise the funds to complete the purchase." PROJECT DEVERON UPDATE - Barrier removal plans moving ahead. ⛏️ Despite its natural appearance, underneath this mass of overgrown vegetation and debris is a old weir blocking fish migration. Following a successful funding application bid which allowed for the investigation, surveying and detailed design of the removal of the decrepit King Edward weir, which is currently blocking fish migration, a follow up bid for delivery funding has now been submitted with a decision due in 4-5 weeks. Our Project Deveron partners, The THE DEVERON, BOGIE AND ISLA RIVERS CHARITABLE TRUST, were invited to submit a second-round application by the Open Rivers Programme which will, if successful, fund the completion of the project in summer 2024. The removal of this old and now severely overgrown and silted-up weir, will allow for over 11 km of Deveron catchment river system to be fully reopened to fish migration for the first time in over 150 years. This will benefit not only wild Atlantic salmon, but other fish species such as trout and eel, as well as biodiversity more widely. On the monitoring side of the project, important to measure the effect of habitat restoration on the salmon population over time, things are also moving forward. A state-of-the-art ARIS sonar imaging fish counter has now completed its trial period and is in operation, already recording fish entering the Deveron. This will give us a hugely important insight into the numbers and timings of returning adult salmon each season. The team is also recording the downstream smolt migration movements of 2,000 parr that were PIT tagged (Passive Integrated Transponder) in the autumn of 2023. We will hopefully detect them returning as adults after one year as grilse (in 2025) or in subsequent years as multi-sea winter salmon. This combined approach of catchment-scale habitat restoration and effective salmon population monitoring at various lifestages, is at the heart of Project Deveron’s strategy.
